Galatians 6:2

Galatians 6:2 in the New King James Version reads: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” This verse is a cornerstone of Christian teaching and has profound implications for modern Christian living.

Theological Interpretation

In the context of Reformed Evangelical Christianity, this verse is seen as a call to practical Christianity [1]. It emphasises the necessity of living out one’s faith through actions, particularly in caring for others [1]. This verse underscores the idea that faith is not only a personal experience but also a communal responsibility [1].

The phrase ‘Law of Christ’ used in Galatians 6:2 is one of the most perplexing turns of phrases in the Pauline corpus [4]. In a letter where the law features centrally, and where Paul argues aggressively that the Galatians must not put themselves ‘under the law,’ reference to ‘the law of the Christ’ can hardly be incidental [4]. The phrase seems deliberately provocative, a “breathtaking paradox” [4].

Application to Modern Christian Living

The application of Galatians 6:2 to modern Christian living involves embodying compassion and discernment [1]. Compassion enables us to take note of those who may be under a heavy burden that they can’t carry alone [1]. We should be attentive to those suffering and offer sympathy, treating their hurt as our own [1].

Discernment helps us determine when someone truly needs help [1]. We don’t want to overlook a genuine need, but sometimes people need to learn how to carry a particular burden or responsibility by themselves [1]. Difficulties in life can help people build righteous character and learn to rely on God [1].

Conclusion

In conclusion, Galatians 6:2 calls us to a life of active love and service to others, fulfilling the law of Christ. This is not just about following rules, but about embodying the love and compassion of Christ in our daily lives. It’s about being there for others in their time of need, but also recognising when to step back and allow them to grow through their struggles. This balance of compassion and discernment is a key aspect of modern Christian living.
