Proverbs 27:17

Proverbs 27:17 (NKJV) states, “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”

Commentary

This verse is found in the book of Proverbs, which is known for its wisdom literature. The primary theme here is the mutual benefit of friendships.

“As iron sharpens iron” is a metaphor that illustrates the idea that in relationships, people can help each other improve. Just as a piece of iron can be used to sharpen another, so friends can help each other become better through their interactions.

“So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” suggests that this sharpening helps to improve one’s character, making one a better person. The word “countenance” may also be understood as “character” or “disposition”. This implies that good friends influence and improve each other’s character and disposition.

In the context of Reformed Evangelical Christianity, this verse can be applied to the concept of fellowship and community within the church. Believers are encouraged to engage in fellowship with one another, not just for social interaction, but for mutual growth and edification. This verse can serve as a reminder of the importance of accountability, discipleship, and community in the Christian journey.

Application to Modern Christian Living

In today’s context, this verse is a call to Christians to actively engage in accountable relationships with fellow believers. It is through these relationships that individuals are refined and grow in their faith. This can take place in various settings such as Bible study groups, prayer meetings, or one-on-one discipleship.

Christians are encouraged to be open to correction and rebuke from fellow believers, understanding that this is a process that helps us to grow and mature in our faith (Proverbs 27:6). In the same way, Christians are also called to lovingly and gently correct our brothers and sisters, with the goal of restoring them to righteousness (Galatians 6:1).
