Philippians 2:5

Philippians 2:5 in the New King James Version (NKJV), reads: “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.”

Commentary

This verse is a call to adopt the mindset of Christ, embodying humility, servanthood, and obedience [1] [2]. It’s part of a larger passage (Philippians 2:5-11) that presents the profound humility of Christ as an example for believers [1].

Christ, despite being in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be exploited. Instead, He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness [1] [2]. This act of humility culminated in His sacrificial death on the cross, demonstrating His obedience and love for humanity [1] [2].

Theological Teaching

Theologically, this verse underscores the dual nature of Christ—His divine nature and His human nature [3]. It highlights Christ’s voluntary self-abasement, His incarnation, and His obedience even unto death [1]. This self-sacrificing love is the cornerstone of Reformed Evangelical Christianity, emphasising grace, redemption, and the transformative power of faith.

Application to Modern Christian Living

Applying Philippians 2:5 to modern Christian living involves embodying the humility of Christ in our daily interactions. This includes:

Renunciation of Selfish Ambitions:

Just as Christ did not exploit His divine status, we are called to let go of selfish ambitions and pride [10].

Servanthood:

Emulating Christ’s servanthood means actively seeking ways to serve others in our communities [11].

Humility and Obedience:

This involves humbling ourselves, acknowledging our limitations, and striving to live in obedience to God’s will [10].

Promoting Unity:

Just as Christ promoted unity among His disciples, we are called to foster unity in our relationships and communities [13].

Continuous Transformation:

Embracing the mindset of Christ is a lifelong journey of transformation, requiring constant renewal of our minds through prayer and meditation on God’s Word [12].
