1 Corinthians 16:13

1 Corinthians 16:13 from the New King James Version (NKJV).

“Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.”

Commentary:

This verse is part of the concluding remarks in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. It serves as a call to vigilance and courage in the face of challenges to the faith.

  • Watch: This is a call for spiritual alertness. Christians are urged to be on guard against spiritual dangers and false teachings (Acts 20:28-31; 1 Peter 5:8). It also implies the anticipation of the Lord’s return (Matthew 24:42).
  • Stand fast in the faith: This is an exhortation to steadfastness in the faith. Believers are encouraged to remain firm in their commitment to the Gospel, despite opposition or hardship (Ephesians 6:13-14).
  • Be brave, be strong: These phrases emphasise the need for courage and spiritual strength. They remind believers to rely on God’s power rather than their own (Ephesians 6:10; 2 Timothy 1:7).

Application to Modern Christian Living:

1 Corinthians 16:13 remains relevant for Christians today. It encourages believers to be vigilant against the subtle influences of secular culture and false teachings that can lead them away from the Gospel. It also reminds Christians to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of trials or persecution. Lastly, it calls believers to rely on God’s strength and to exhibit courage in living out their faith.
