Profiting from Trials 

2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces [a]patience.

Commentary: 

This passage is a call to joy in the midst of trials. The author, James, is not suggesting that trials are joyful in themselves. Instead, he is saying that the trials should be faced with an attitude of joy because of what trials can produce in one’s life. 

This passage is often interpreted as a reminder of God’s sovereignty and goodness. Even in the midst of trials, God is at work to shape and refine us. The “testing of your faith” is not meant to destroy us but to develop the virtue of patience in us. Patience, in the biblical sense, is not simply waiting but maintaining faith and good character during the waiting.
