Galatians 5:16

Galatians 5:16 in the New King James Version reads: “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” [11] This verse is a pivotal command in the Christian life.

Commentary

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, introduces the concept of living by the Spirit as opposed to living by the flesh [10]. The term “flesh” here does not refer to the physical body, but rather to the sinful nature of humans [1]. It represents the earthly mind, the depraved will, and the slothful and careless soul [1].

In contrast, to “walk in the Spirit” is to live a new life in Jesus Christ [2]. It means to move away from the old life of bondage to any idea, person, system, or idea of salvation by religious ritual [2]. The Spirit here refers to the Holy Spirit, who guides and empowers believers to live a life that is pleasing to God [7].

Insights and Theological Teaching

The command to “walk in the Spirit” is a call to live a life that is guided and controlled by the Holy Spirit [1]. This involves an ongoing struggle between the “old creature” and the “new man,” as taught in Luther’s Small Catechism [8]. The old creature, representing our sinful nature, should be drowned daily through contrition and repentance, allowing the new man to emerge and live before God in righteousness and purity [8].

Application to Modern Christian Living

In the context of modern Christian living, walking in the Spirit means living a life that reflects the fruit of the Spirit as outlined in Galatians 5:22–23 [11]. These include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control [11].

Walking in the Spirit also involves serving one another with humility out of love [3]. This is not a form of bondage, but rather an exercise of true freedom in Christ [3]. It is a daily commitment to live according to God’s will and not according to our sinful desires [4].
