John 20:29

John 20:29 NKJV reads: “Jesus said to him, ‘Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'”

Commentary and Theological Teaching:

This verse is part of the post-resurrection appearance of Jesus to His disciples, specifically addressing Thomas, who had doubted the resurrection until he saw Jesus [16]. This verse is significant as it underscores the principle of faith [3] [4].

  1. Faith and Belief: The verse highlights the importance of faith and belief in the unseen [3] [4]. Jesus commends those who believe without physical evidence, emphasising the value of faith that is not dependent on empirical proof [3] [4]. This aligns with the understanding of faith as a response to the Word of God [3].
  1. Sovereignty of God: The verse also reflects the principle of the sovereignty of God [6]. It suggests that belief is not merely a human act but is enabled by God’s grace [6]. This is consistent with the emphasis on God’s initiative in the process of salvation [6].

Application to Modern Christian Living:

  1. Living by Faith: Christians today are called to live by faith, not by sight [13]. This means trusting in God’s promises and His character, even when circumstances are challenging, or God’s actions are not immediately apparent [13].
  1. Witnessing to Others: As modern-day believers who have not seen Jesus physically, we are in the blessed position described in this verse [15]. Our faith, therefore, serves as a witness to others of the reality and power of the risen Christ [15].
