Romans 5:3–5

Romans 5:3-5 from the New King James Version (NKJV)reads as follows [6]:

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces [a]perseverance; and perseverance, [b]character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Footnotes

Commentary:

This passage speaks to the transformative power of suffering and the hope that springs from it. Suffering is not a punishment or a sign of God’s disapproval, but rather as a tool that God uses to shape and refine us [14].

  1. Tribulation Produces Perseverance: The first step in this transformative process is that tribulation, or suffering, produces perseverance [14]. This means that when we face trials and difficulties, we learn to endure and remain steadfast in our faith. This endurance is not a passive acceptance of suffering, but an active, faith-filled response that trusts in God’s sovereignty and goodness [10].
  1. Perseverance Produces Character: As we persevere through tribulations, our character is refined and strengthened [14]. This character is not a worldly character marked by self-reliance and pride, but a godly character that reflects the likeness of Christ. It’s a character that has been tested and approved by God [3].
  1. Character Produces Hope: The hope mentioned here is not wishful thinking or uncertain longing. Instead, it’s a confident expectation of God’s promises [15]. This hope does not disappoint us because it’s anchored in the love of God, which has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit [6].

Application to Modern Christian Living:

In our modern lives, this passage encourages us to view our sufferings from a new perspective. Instead of seeing them as obstacles, we can see them as opportunities for spiritual growth [12]. As we endure trials with a godly character, we deepen our relationship with God and grow in our assurance of His promises [3]. This gives us a hope that does not disappoint, a hope that sustains us in all of life’s ups and downs [15].
