1 Peter 4:16

New King James Version of 1 Peter 4:16:

“Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.” [1]

This verse is part of a larger passage where Peter encourages believers to live for God and endure suffering for Christ’s sake.

Commentary

1 Peter 4:16 is a call to Christians to embrace suffering for the sake of Christ. The term “Christian” was initially a term of derision among non-believers [6]. However, Peter reclaims this term, encouraging believers to take pride in their identity as followers of Christ, even in the face of suffering [9].

The verse suggests that suffering as a Christian is not a cause for shame but an opportunity to glorify God [6]. Our sufferings, when endured for Christ, serve to glorify God and refine our faith [13] [14].

Application to Modern Christian Living

This verse reminds us that suffering for one’s faith is not an anomaly but a part of the Christian journey. Christians today may face various forms of suffering, including ridicule, discrimination, or even persecution for their faith. In such situations, believers are encouraged to remain steadfast, not be ashamed, and continue to glorify God [14].

This verse also underscores the importance of maintaining a Christ-like attitude in the face of suffering. Just as Christ suffered and was not ashamed, so too should Christians view their suffering in His name as a means to glorify God [9].
