Philippians 1:9–10

Commentary on Philippians 1:9–10 (NKJV)

Philippians 1:9–10 (NKJV): “And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.”

Context and Overview

The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Philippians during his imprisonment in Rome around A.D. 61. The church in Philippi was the first church Paul established in Europe, and it held a special place in his heart. Philippians 1:9–10 is part of Paul’s prayer for the Philippian believers, expressing his deep desire for their spiritual growth and maturity.

Insights and Theological Teaching

  1. Abounding Love in Knowledge and Discernment
  • Paul prays that the Philippians’ love would “abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment” (Philippians 1:9). This love is not merely an emotional feeling but is deeply rooted in the knowledge of God and His truth. This aligns with the emphasis on the importance of sound doctrine and understanding of Scripture. Love must be informed by knowledge and discernment to be genuine and effective.
  • The Greek word for “knowledge” (ἐπίγνωσις, epignosis) implies a full, precise, and correct knowledge. It is a knowledge that comes from a deep relationship with God and understanding of His Word. “Discernment” (αἴσθησις, aisthesis) refers to moral perception and insight, enabling believers to distinguish between right and wrong.
  1. Approving the Things That Are Excellent
  • Paul continues by stating that this abounding love in knowledge and discernment will enable the Philippians to “approve the things that are excellent” (Philippians 1:10). This means to test and recognise what is truly valuable and worthy of pursuit. In modern Christian living, this calls believers to prioritise what aligns with God’s will and to make choices that reflect His values.
  • The passage emphasises the sovereignty of God and the importance of living a life that glorifies Him. Approving what is excellent involves seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness above all else (Matthew 6:33).
  1. Sincerity and Blamelessness
  • The ultimate goal of this prayer is that the Philippians may be “sincere and without offence till the day of Christ” (Philippians 1:10). “Sincere” (εἰλικρινής, eilikrinēs) means pure and genuine, without hidden motives. “Without offence” (ἀπρόσκοπος, aproskopos) means blameless, not causing others to stumble.
  • This teaching encourages believers to live lives of integrity and holiness, reflecting the character of Christ. It is a call to be authentic in one’s faith and to avoid actions that could lead others astray. The emphasis on sanctification highlights the ongoing process of being made holy through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Application to Modern Christian Living

  • Growing in Love and Knowledge: Believers are encouraged to continually grow in their love for God and others, informed by a deep understanding of Scripture. This involves regular study of the Bible, prayer, and participation in the life of the church.
  • Discernment in Decision-Making: Christians are called to exercise discernment in their daily lives, making choices that honour God and reflect His values. This includes ethical decisions, relationships, and how one uses their time and resources.
  • Living with Integrity: The call to be sincere and blameless challenges believers to live authentically and transparently. This involves confessing sins, seeking forgiveness, and striving to live in a way that does not cause others to stumble.
