1. Association with the Wise: 

• The verse begins with a positive assertion: “He who walks with wise men will be wise.” This highlights the biblical principle that wisdom is not only a personal pursuit but also a communal one. In Reformed theology, wisdom is seen as a gift from God, often imparted through the means of grace, including the fellowship of believers. Walking with wise men implies engaging in relationships with those who fear the Lord and live according to His commandments (Proverbs 9:10). 

2. Consequences of Foolish Companionship: 

• The latter part of the verse, “But the companion of fools will be destroyed,” serves as a stark warning. In Reformed thought, foolishness is often equated with sin and rebellion against God. The destruction mentioned here can be understood as both temporal and eternal consequences of living a life apart from God’s wisdom. This aligns with the doctrine of total depravity, which teaches that apart from God’s grace, humans are inclined towards sin and folly.

1. Choosing Godly Companions: 

• Modern Christians are encouraged to seek fellowship with those who exhibit godly wisdom. This can be through church communities, Bible study groups, and other Christian gatherings. The influence of godly companions can lead to spiritual growth, accountability, and encouragement in the faith. 

2. Avoiding Harmful Associations: 

• Christians are also warned to avoid close associations with those who live in persistent sin and folly. This does not mean shunning non-believers but being cautious about the influence they may have on one’s spiritual life. The New Testament echoes this principle in passages like 1 Corinthians 15:33: “Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits.'”
