Spiritual blessing

In Ephesians 1:3, the phrase “spiritual blessing” refers to the divine benefits and gifts that believers receive through their relationship with Christ. These blessings are not material or earthly but are spiritual in nature, encompassing aspects such as salvation, grace, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit [1].

The original Greek word for “blessing” in this verse is εὐλογία (eulogia), which means “good speaking” or “praise” [4]. It is derived from the verb εὐλογέω (eulogeō), which means “to speak well of” or “to bless” [4]. In the context of Ephesians 1:3, it signifies the divine favour and benefits bestowed upon believers by God.

The Christian understanding of “blessing” differs significantly from the common non-Christian usage. Non-Christians often view blessings as tangible, material benefits such as wealth, health, or success [5]. In contrast, Christians see blessings as primarily spiritual and eternal, focusing on the relationship with God and the inner transformation that comes from faith in Christ [5]. For example, Christians believe that being blessed includes experiencing God’s grace, forgiveness, and the promise of eternal life, which are not dependent on earthly circumstances [5].

In summary, “spiritual blessing” in Ephesians 1:3 refers to the divine and eternal benefits believers receive through Christ, which are fundamentally different from the material and temporary blessings often sought by non-Christians.
