Nahum 1:7

Commentary on Nahum 1:7 (NKJV)

Nahum 1:7 (NKJV): “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.”

Context and Background

The book of Nahum is a prophetic text that focuses on the impending judgment of Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. Nahum’s prophecy is a message of comfort to the people of Judah, assuring them of God’s justice and protection. Nahum 1:7 stands out as a verse of hope and reassurance amidst the pronouncement of judgment.

Theological Insights

  1. The Goodness of God: The verse begins with a declaration of God’s inherent goodness. This is a foundational attribute of God in Christian theology. God’s goodness is not contingent on circumstances but is an essential part of His nature. This goodness is evident in His creation, providence, and redemptive work.
  1. God as a Stronghold: The term “stronghold” signifies a place of refuge and safety. In times of trouble, believers can find security in God’s unchanging nature. This concept is echoed throughout Scripture, such as in Psalms 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
  1. Divine Knowledge and Care: The phrase “He knows those who trust in Him” highlights God’s intimate relationship with His people. This knowledge is not merely intellectual but relational and covenantal. God recognises, cares for, and preserves those who place their trust in Him.

Application to Modern Christian Living

  1. Trust in God’s Goodness: In contemporary Christian life, believers are called to trust in God’s goodness, even when faced with trials and uncertainties. This trust is rooted in the assurance that God’s character is unchanging, and His purposes are ultimately for our good (Romans 8:28).
  1. Seeking Refuge in God: Modern Christians are encouraged to seek refuge in God during times of trouble. This involves turning to Him in prayer, relying on His promises, and finding peace in His presence. The church community can also serve as a tangible expression of God’s refuge, providing support and encouragement.
  1. Living in Covenant Relationship: Understanding that God knows and cares for those who trust in Him should inspire believers to live faithfully in their covenant relationship with Him. This includes obedience to His commands, regular worship, and active participation in the life of the church.
