1 Thessalonians 5:11

Commentary on 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NKJV)

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NKJV): “Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.”

Context and Background

The Apostle Paul wrote the First Epistle to the Thessalonians to encourage and instruct the young church in Thessalonica. Chapter 5 of this epistle deals with the anticipation of the “Day of the Lord” and the appropriate conduct for believers as they await Christ’s return. Paul emphasises the importance of being vigilant, sober, and encouraging one another in the faith.

Exegesis of 1 Thessalonians 5:11

“Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.”

  1. “Therefore”: This word connects the verse to the preceding context, where Paul discusses the suddenness of the Lord’s return and the need for believers to be prepared (1 Thessalonians 5:1–10). The exhortation to comfort and edify one another is a response to the eschatological teachings.
  1. “Comfort each other”: The Greek word for “comfort” is “παρακαλέω” (parakaleó), which means to call to one’s side, to encourage, or to console. This comfort is rooted in the assurance of salvation and the hope of Christ’s return. Believers are to support one another through trials and tribulations, reminding each other of the promises of God.
  1. “Edify one another”: The term “edify” comes from the Greek word “οἰκοδομέω” (oikodomeó), which means to build up. This involves spiritual growth and strengthening of faith. Edification is closely linked to the means of grace, such as the preaching of the Word, sacraments, and prayer. Believers are to build each other up in the faith, encouraging holiness and godly living.
  1. “Just as you also are doing”: Paul acknowledges that the Thessalonians are already practising these virtues. This commendation serves as an encouragement to continue and excel still more in their mutual support and edification.

Theological Insights

  1. Community and Mutual Support: Christianity places a strong emphasis on the community of believers. The church is seen as the body of Christ, where each member has a role in supporting and building up others (Ephesians 4:12–16). This mutual support is essential for spiritual growth and perseverance in the faith.
  1. Eschatological Hope: The anticipation of Christ’s return is a central theme. This hope provides comfort and motivation for holy living. Believers are encouraged to live in light of eternity, supporting one another as they await the fulfilment of God’s promises.
  1. Means of Grace: The Christian tradition emphasises the importance of the means of grace in the edification of believers. The preaching of the Word, sacraments, and prayer are seen as vital for spiritual growth and encouragement. Believers are to engage in these means of grace both individually and corporately.

Application to Modern Christian Living

  1. Encouragement in Trials: Modern Christians can apply this verse by offering comfort and encouragement to fellow believers facing difficulties. This can be done through prayer, sharing Scripture, and providing practical support.
  1. Building Up in Faith: Edification involves more than just encouragement; it requires intentional efforts to help others grow in their faith. This can include Bible studies, discipleship, and accountability relationships.
  1. Living in Light of Christ’s Return: The eschatological focus of this passage reminds believers to live with an eternal perspective. This involves prioritising spiritual growth, evangelism, and living out the gospel in everyday life.
