Commentary on Psalm 91:1–2

Text of Psalm 91:1–2 (NKJV):

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High

Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress;

My God, in Him I will trust.’”

Overview and Context

Psalm 91 is a psalm of trust and assurance, often attributed to Moses or David, though its authorship remains uncertain. The psalm offers profound reassurance of God’s protection, sovereignty, and faithfulness, making it a cherished passage among believers. It describes God’s unfailing care for His people amidst trials, adversities, and dangers. This psalm illustrates the covenantal relationship between God and His people, highlighting God’s sovereign grace as the foundation of protection and refuge for His elect.

Psalm 91:1–2 introduces the themes of intimacy with God, divine protection, and trust. These two verses emphasise abiding in God’s presence and trusting in His character.

Dwelling in the Secret Place of the Most High:

The phrase “dwells in the secret place of the Most High” conveys intimacy and communion with God. The “secret place” refers to a position of close fellowship, not accessible to all but reserved for those who are in covenant with God through faith. This points to the believer’s union with Christ, which secures access to God’s presence (Ephesians 2:18). Abiding here signifies a life of prayer, worship, and reliance on God’s promises.

The Shadow of the Almighty:

The metaphor of God’s shadow illustrates His encompassing care and shelter. In the desert climates of the ancient Near East, shade was a vital source of protection from the sun’s intensity. Spiritually, God’s shadow represents His provision, protection, and the safety found under His sovereignty. For modern Christians, this reminds us of Christ’s redemptive work, where believers are shielded from the ultimate consequences of sin under His atoning sacrifice.

Declaring God as Refuge and Fortress:

Verse 2 shifts from a third-person description to a first-person declaration: “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress.’” This personal confession underscores the believer’s trust in God’s protection. A refuge offers safety, and a fortress symbolises strength and defence against enemies. In a world filled with uncertainties, these verses remind believers to place their trust in God rather than human strength or worldly security. The assurance of God’s providence brings peace amidst anxiety.

The ultimate “secret place” is found in Christ, who provides eternal safety and security through His finished work on the cross. This is the cornerstone of faith and the source of assurance.
