Colossians 3:2

Commentary on Colossians 3:2

Context of Colossians 3

The Colossians opens with a reminder that believers have been raised with Christ and now share in His resurrection life. Paul builds practical instruction on this foundation, urging the Colossians to “seek the things which are above, where Christ is” and to recognise that their present life is “hidden with Christ in God.” This union with the risen Saviour reshapes identity and behaviour for all who trust Him.

Exegesis of Colossians 3:2

Colossians 3:2 states:
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” (NKJV)

Greek Meaning of “Set Your Mind”

The verb translated “set your mind” is phroneō (φρονέω), carrying the sense of deep reflection and intentional focus. It appears in the present imperative mood, indicating a continuous action: believers are to keep directing their thoughts toward heavenly realities rather than merely glancing at them once.

“Set Your Mind on Things Above”

By calling us to fix our thoughts on “things above,” Paul references the spiritual realm where Christ now sits at God’s right hand. Heaven and earth are fundamentally opposed; affection for one will diminish affection for the other. Christian minds renewed by the Spirit “despise earthly things, and desire those that are heavenly.”

“Not on Things on the Earth”

Paul’s contrast warns against allowing temporal wealth, honour or pleasure to occupy the believer’s affections. Although not every earthly good is evil in itself, it becomes harmful when it replaces our longing for heavenly treasure (idolatry). By setting minds on the unseen, Christians resist the idolatry of immediate gratification and stay anchored in eternal hope.

Theological Insights

  1. Union with Christ as the Basis of Affections
Believers are united to Christ by faith and Spirit. Because our life is “hidden with Christ in God,” our affections are to be recalibrated by our new identity in Him rather than our former fleshly nature.
  2. Mortification and Vivification
Heavenly-mindedness fuels both putting sin to death and putting on Christ-likeness. Setting the mind above is not escapism but the first step in sanctification—mortifying the old self and vivifying the new self in love and holiness.
  3. Heavenly Priorities Over Cultural Pressures
In an age of consumerism and distraction, spiritual realities define Christian living far more than cultural success or comfort.

Application to Modern Christian Living

  • Daily Mind Renewal
Begin each morning with Scripture and prayer, deliberately reflecting on passages that point to Christ’s reign (e.g., Colossians 3:1–4) and renewing the mind according to God’s truth (Romans 12:2).
  • Affection Audit
Regularly evaluate personal priorities. Are social media, career ambitions or family comforts unduly ruling your thoughts? Replace those with meditation on Christ’s promises and eternal inheritance.
  • Community Encouragement
Join a Bible study or fellowship group that cultivates heaven-centred conversation. Shared reflection on “things above” fosters mutual growth and accountability.
  • Service from a Heavenly Perspective
Approach every act of service—whether at home, work or church—as an expression of Christ-like love, motivated by eternal rather than earthly reward.

By consciously setting our minds above, we align daily living with the gospel’s transformative power, walking in holiness and hope as citizens of a heavenly kingdom.

Summary of Teaching

Colossians 3:2’s core teaching is the call to “heavenly-mindedness.” Rooted in union with the resurrected Christ, it confronts believers with the choice between temporary satisfactions and eternal realities. Christianity upholds this verse as foundational for sanctification, urging continuous mind renewal, mortification of sin and a community shaped by shared heavenly affections.
