The Text
James 5:8 (NKJV):
“You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.”
Exegesis of James 5:8
Context within James 5
James 5[i] is a chapter that contrasts two groups:
- The wealthy oppressors who exploit others (James 5:1–6).
- The faithful believers who suffer under injustice and hardship (James 5:7–12).
James exhorts believers to endure suffering with patience, looking forward to the Lord’s return. The farmer waiting for the harvest (James 5:7) is the image that sets the stage for verse 8. Just as the farmer trusts the seasons and God’s providence, so Christians must trust in God’s timing.
Key Phrases
- “You also be patient”: This is a command, not a suggestion. Patience here is not passive resignation but active endurance. It is the same patience seen in the prophets (James 5:10) and Job (James 5:11).
- “Establish your hearts”: The Greek word stērizō means to strengthen, to make firm, to set fast. James calls believers to spiritual resilience, rooted in Christ.
- “For the coming of the Lord is at hand”: This is eschatological hope. The “coming” (parousia) refers to the second coming of Jesus Christ. James emphasises imminence[ii]—not necessarily that it will happen immediately, but that it is certain and near in God’s plan.
Theological Insights
- Eschatological Hope
The Christian life is lived in light of Christ’s return. This hope is not escapism but the anchor of perseverance. Christian theology stresses that Christ’s second coming is the consummation of God’s redemptive plan. - Sanctification through Patience
Patience is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23 NKJV: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”). James links patience with holiness. Establishing the heart means being steadfast in faith, resisting wavering. - Christ-centred Endurance
The believer’s strength is not self-generated. Hearts are established by grace through faith in Christ. Christian teaching reminds us that perseverance is the work of God in the believer (Philippians 1:6 NKJV: “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”).
Meditation Guide
Step 1: Read and Reflect
Read James 5:7–12 slowly. Picture the farmer waiting for the rain. Reflect on your own life: where do you need patience?
Step 2: Pray for Strength
Pray: “Lord, establish my heart in Christ. Teach me to wait with hope and endurance.”
Step 3: Apply to Daily Life
- In times of workplace stress, remember the Lord is near.
- When facing injustice, resist bitterness; instead, entrust yourself to God’s justice.
- In family struggles, cultivate patience, knowing Christ will return to make all things new.
Step 4: Encourage Others
James 5:9 warns against grumbling. Instead of complaining, encourage fellow believers with the hope of Christ’s coming.
Application to Modern Christian Living
- Workplace and Society: Christians may feel overlooked or mistreated. James calls us to patience, trusting God’s justice.
- Family and Relationships: Establishing the heart means being firm in love and forgiveness, even when wronged.
- Church Life: The church must live as a community of hope, reminding one another of Christ’s return.
- Personal Trials: Illness, financial strain, or loneliness are endured with patience, knowing the Lord is near.
[i] James 5
New King James Version
Rich Oppressors Will Be Judged
5 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. 4 Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. 5 You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.
Be Patient and Persevering
7 Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. 8 You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
9 Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! 10 My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience. 11 Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord—that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.
12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “Yes” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No,” lest you fall into judgment.
Meeting Specific Needs
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.
Bring Back the Erring One
19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
