Commentary on Matthew 7:12
Text (King James Version):
“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” — Matthew 7:12
1. Setting Matthew 7:12 in Its Biblical Context
Matthew chapter 7[i] forms the final movement of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5–7), where Jesus teaches what life in the kingdom of heaven looks like. The chapter includes warnings against hypocritical judgement (Matthew 7:1–5: “Judge not, that ye be not judged…”), encouragement to pray with confidence in the Father’s goodness (Matthew 7:7–11: “Ask, and it shall be given you…”), and sober reminders about the narrow way (Matthew 7:13–14: “Enter ye in at the strait gate…”).
Into this rich tapestry Jesus places Matthew 7:12, often called the Golden Rule. It is presented not as a stand‑alone proverb but as the ethical heart of the Sermon’s teaching on relationships. The word “Therefore” signals that Jesus is drawing together everything He has just said about judgement, mercy, prayer, and the Father’s character.
2. Exegetical Insights
A. “All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you…”
Jesus begins with a universal principle. The phrase “all things whatsoever” leaves no room for selective obedience. The command is not limited to particular situations or particular people. It covers every sphere of human interaction.
The standard is not what others have done to us, nor what we think they deserve, but what we ourselves would want if we were in their place. This requires imagination, empathy, and humility—virtues that flow from a heart transformed by grace.
B. “…do ye even so to them”
The command is active, not passive. Jesus does not say, “Do not harm others,” but “Do good to others.” This aligns with the broader ethic of the Sermon on the Mount, where disciples are called to love enemies (Matthew 5:44: “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you…”), forgive freely, and pursue reconciliation.
C. “For this is the law and the prophets”
Jesus identifies this command as the essence of the Old Testament’s moral teaching. This echoes His earlier statement in Matthew 5:17: “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets…” The Golden Rule summarises the second great commandment in Matthew 22:39: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
In Christian theology, this reflects the abiding moral law of God, which continues to guide believers in sanctification. The Golden Rule is not a pathway to salvation but a fruit of salvation—a way of life shaped by the gospel.
3. Theological Reflections
A. The Rule Flows from God’s Character
Matthew 7:11 reminds us that the Father gives good gifts:
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”
Because God is generous, His children are to be generous. Christian ethics is always grounded in divine grace.
B. The Rule Exposes Our Sin
When taken seriously, the Golden Rule reveals how far short we fall. We often treat others according to convenience, prejudice, or self‑interest. The command drives us back to Christ, who alone fulfilled the law perfectly.
C. The Rule Points to Christ’s Fulfilment
Jesus Himself embodied this principle. He treated others not as they treated Him, but as He would have them treat Him—with mercy, compassion, and sacrificial love. His death on the cross is the ultimate expression of doing for others what they could never do for themselves.
4. Application to Modern Christian Living
A. In Personal Relationships
- Speak to others as you would want to be spoken to—truthfully, gently, and respectfully.
- Seek reconciliation quickly, remembering Matthew 5:23–24.
- Consider the needs of others before your own.
B. In the Church
- Practise hospitality and generosity.
- Avoid gossip and harsh judgement, remembering Matthew 7:1–5.
- Encourage and build up fellow believers.
C. In the Workplace
- Treat colleagues with fairness and integrity.
- Work diligently, as you would want others to work for you.
- Refuse to participate in unethical behaviour, even when it is normalised.
D. In Society
- Advocate for justice and mercy, especially for the vulnerable.
- Engage in public life with humility and grace.
- Resist the cultural pull toward self‑centredness.
5. Meditation Guide
A. Reflect
Read Matthew 7:12 slowly. Ask:
- Where am I failing to treat others as I would want to be treated?
- What fears or idols hinder me from obeying this command?
B. Pray
- Thank God for His generosity and mercy.
- Confess where you have fallen short.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to shape your heart to reflect Christ’s love.
C. Act
Choose one relationship today where you will intentionally apply the Golden Rule. Make a concrete plan—an encouraging word, a generous act, or a step toward reconciliation.
[i] Matthew 7
King James Version
7 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
