Commentary on Genesis 1:1
The Text
Genesis 1:1 (King James Version):
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
1. Exegetical Commentary
🌏 1.1 The Opening Declaration
Genesis 1:1 is not merely an introduction; it is a theological foundation stone. It declares that everything begins with God. Before time, matter, or life existed, God already was. The verse is a simple sentence, yet it carries profound weight.
The phrase “In the beginning” refers to the beginning of the created order, not the beginning of God. Scripture consistently affirms that God is eternal.
- Psalm 90:2 (KJV):
“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”
This means Genesis 1:1 is not about God’s origin but about the origin of everything else.
✝️ 1.2 “God” — Elohim
The Hebrew word Elohim is grammatically plural, yet it takes a singular verb (created). This subtly hints at the complexity of God’s being. While Genesis 1 does not explicitly teach the Trinity, it leaves room for the fuller revelation that comes later in Scripture.
Later in the chapter, we read:
- Genesis 1:26 (KJV):
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…”
The plural language (“us,” “our”) is consistent with the Christian understanding that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are involved in creation.
The New Testament confirms this:
- John 1:3 (KJV):
“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” - Colossians 1:16 (KJV):
“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth…”
Thus, Genesis 1:1 is a Trinitarian act expressed in Old Testament language.
🌌 1.3 “Created” — Bara
The verb bara is used in Scripture only of God. It means to bring into existence something entirely new, something that did not previously exist. This is creation ex nihilo — creation out of nothing.
Human beings can make, shape, or form, but only God creates in this absolute sense.
🌤️ 1.4 “The heaven and the earth”
This is a merism — a figure of speech that uses two extremes to refer to the whole. It means “the entire universe.”
Genesis 1:1 is therefore a summary statement of the whole creation account that follows in Genesis 1:2–31.
2. Theological Teaching from Genesis 1
🕊️ 2.1 God is sovereign
Genesis 1 presents God as the uncontested ruler. He speaks, and creation obeys.
- Genesis 1:3 (KJV):
“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”
There is no struggle, no rival deity, no cosmic battle. God’s word is enough.
🌱 2.2 Creation is orderly and purposeful
Genesis 1 shows a structured pattern:
- Days 1–3: forming
- Days 4–6: filling
This reveals God’s wisdom and intentionality. Creation is not random or chaotic.
👤 2.3 Humanity has dignity and purpose
Human beings are created in God’s image.
- Genesis 1:27 (KJV):
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
This grounds human worth, ethics, and vocation.
🌿 2.4 Creation is good
After each creative act, God declares it “good” and after creating humanity, “very good.”
- Genesis 1:31 (KJV):
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”
This affirms the goodness of the physical world and the legitimacy of enjoying it rightly.
3. Meditation Guide
🧘 3.1 Reflect on God’s eternal nature
Sit quietly and consider that before anything existed, God was. Let this truth steady your heart. Your life is not built on shifting sand but on the eternal God.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
Meditation prompt:
“Lord, help me rest in your eternal, unchanging character.”
🌤️ 3.2 Reflect on God’s creative power
Everything you see — sky, trees, oceans, people — exists because God willed it. Creation is a daily reminder of his power and generosity.
Meditation prompt:
“Father, open my eyes to see your glory in the world you have made.”
🧭 3.3 Reflect on your purpose
You are not an accident. You are created intentionally, in God’s image, for relationship with him and for stewardship of his world.
Meditation prompt:
“Lord, show me how to live today as your image-bearer.”
🌱 3.4 Reflect on God’s goodness
Genesis 1[i] reveals a God who delights in what he makes. His goodness is woven into creation.
Meditation prompt:
“Gracious God, help me trust your goodness in every circumstance.”
4. Application to Modern Christian Living
🏛️ 4.1 Worship God as Creator
In a world that often reduces life to chance or material processes, Genesis 1:1 calls Christians to worship the Creator with awe and gratitude.
🌿 4.2 Care for creation
Stewardship is not optional. Christians should lead in caring for the environment, using resources wisely, and valuing the created world.
🤝 4.3 Honour human dignity
Every person bears God’s image. This shapes how we treat colleagues, neighbours, the vulnerable, and even those we disagree with.
🧠 4.4 Live with purpose
Genesis 1 frees us from meaninglessness. Your work, relationships, and daily choices matter because you are part of God’s purposeful creation.
🕊️ 4.5 Trust God’s sovereignty
If God created the universe by his word, he is more than able to sustain you. Genesis 1:1 is a call to trust.
[i] Genesis 1
King James Version
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
