1. Core Text: 1 Corinthians 3:16
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16, KJV)
This single verse sits at the heart of Paul’s pastoral correction to a divided church. It is both a rebuke and a reassurance: a rebuke to those tearing the church apart through pride and factionalism, and a reassurance that God himself dwells among his people.
2. Exegetical Commentary on 1 Corinthians 3:16
A. The Context of 1 Corinthians 3[i]
Paul writes to a church fractured by loyalties to human leaders. Earlier he says:
“For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?” (1 Corinthians 3:4, KJV)
He exposes the immaturity of the Corinthians, calling them “babes in Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:1, KJV). Their divisions reveal a worldly mindset. Paul then reframes ministry itself:
“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.” (1 Corinthians 3:6, KJV)
Ministers are servants; God alone is the source of life and growth.
Paul then shifts to a building metaphor:
“Ye are God’s building.” (1 Corinthians 3:9, KJV)
He warns that every builder must take care how he builds on the foundation of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:10–11, KJV). The quality of each person’s work will be tested by fire (1 Corinthians 3:13, KJV).
It is at this point that Paul delivers the climactic declaration of verse 16.
B. “Know ye not…” — A Pastoral Rebuke
Paul uses a rhetorical question to jolt the Corinthians awake. “Know ye not” appears repeatedly in the letter as a pastoral device to confront spiritual blindness.
Here it means: You should already understand this. Your behaviour contradicts what you claim to believe.
C. “Ye are the temple of God” — The Church as God’s Dwelling
The “ye” is plural. Paul is speaking not of individual believers (though that is true elsewhere), but of the gathered church.
The temple in the Old Testament was the place of God’s presence, holiness, and worship. To call the church “the temple of God” is to say:
- God dwells among his people.
- The church is holy ground.
- The church belongs to God, not to human leaders.
- Division, pride, and rivalry are not merely relational problems; they are desecrations of God’s dwelling place.
Paul intensifies this in the next verse:
“If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” (1 Corinthians 3:17, KJV)
This is not a light matter. To tear down the church is to attack the dwelling place of God.
D. “The Spirit of God dwelleth in you” — The Present Reality
This is not a future hope but a present fact. The Spirit’s indwelling is the defining mark of the new covenant community.
The Spirit:
- unites believers to Christ
- forms the church into one body
- empowers holiness
- produces spiritual fruit
- builds up the church through gifts
- testifies to our adoption
- glorifies Christ
To divide the church is to resist the Spirit’s work.
3. Theological Themes
A. The Church as God’s Holy Dwelling
Christian theology emphasises the holiness of the church as God’s possession. The church is not a voluntary association but a spiritual house built by God.
B. The Unity of the Body
Unity is not optional. It flows from the Spirit’s presence. Factionalism denies the gospel.
C. The Centrality of Christ
The only foundation is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11, KJV). Any ministry or identity built on personalities, preferences, or power structures is unstable.
D. The Seriousness of Ministry
Those who teach, lead, or influence the church must build with care. The testing fire of God’s judgment will reveal the true quality of their work.
4. Meditation Guide for Personal and Group Use
A. Preparing the Heart
Sit quietly and pray:
“Lord, help me see your church as you see it. Make me a builder, not a destroyer.”
B. Read the Passage Slowly
Read 1 Corinthians 3:1–17 aloud, pausing at verse 16.
1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?
6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.
10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
C. Reflective Questions
- What attitudes or behaviours in my life contribute to unity?
- What attitudes or behaviours might contribute to division?
- Do I treat the church as God’s holy dwelling or as a human organisation?
- How does knowing that the Spirit dwells among us change the way I speak, serve, or disagree?
- What “materials” am I using to build up others—humility, patience, truth, love—or pride, criticism, and rivalry?
D. Prayer
“Father, thank you that your Spirit dwells among your people. Forgive me for any way I have contributed to division. Make me a faithful builder on the foundation of Christ. Strengthen our church to reflect your holiness and unity.”
E. Practical Steps for the Week
- Speak one word of encouragement to someone in your church.
- Pray for unity in your congregation.
- Seek reconciliation where relationships are strained.
- Serve quietly in a way that draws no attention to yourself.
- Reflect on how your words—spoken or online—either build up or tear down.
[i] 1 Corinthians 3
King James Version
3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
21 Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are your’s;
22 Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are your’s;
23 And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.
