Commentary on Psalm 34:18
Psalm 34:18 (King James Version): “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
1. Concise Takeaway
Psalm 34:18 teaches that the Lord draws near to those crushed by sorrow and humbled by sin, and He delivers them with His saving presence. This nearness is not sentimental but covenantal, grounded in His character and fulfilled ultimately in Jesus Christ.
2. Exegetical Commentary
📖 Literary and Historical Context
Psalm 34[i] is a psalm of David, written “when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed” (Psalm 34:1, KJV). David had fled from Saul, sought refuge among the Philistines, and feigned madness to escape danger (1 Samuel 21:10–15). He was a man under pressure, fear, and humiliation. Yet this psalm is full of praise, thanksgiving, and instruction.
Psalm 34 is an acrostic poem, each verse beginning with successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet. This structure suggests deliberate teaching: David is not merely emoting; he is discipling God’s people through his experience.
📖 Verse 18 in the Flow of the Psalm
Psalm 34 moves through several themes:
- Praise and testimony
(verses 1–7) - Instruction in godliness
(verses 8–14) - Assurance of God’s care for the righteous
(verses 15–22)
Verse 18 sits within the assurance section. It is a pastoral word to the afflicted, the repentant, and the spiritually crushed.
📖 Word Study and Theological Meaning
“The LORD is nigh”
God’s nearness is covenantal. He is not distant or indifferent. His nearness is relational, protective, and active. This echoes other passages:
- “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.” (Nahum 1:7, KJV)
- “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” (James 4:8, KJV)
“Broken heart”
This is not merely emotional sadness. The Hebrew phrase refers to:
- A heart shattered by suffering
- A heart humbled by sin
- A heart aware of its need for God
David himself knew this deeply:
- “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” (Psalm 51:17, KJV)
“Contrite spirit”
The word “contrite” carries the sense of being crushed to powder. It is the opposite of pride, self-reliance, or spiritual hardness.
God’s saving work is directed toward those who know they cannot save themselves.
“Saveth”
This salvation is both:
- Temporal
deliverance from danger, fear, and distress - Spiritual
forgiveness, restoration, and eternal life
In the fullness of Scripture, this salvation is found in Jesus Christ:
- “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10, KJV)
3. Theological Teaching
✝️ 1. God’s Character: Near to the Lowly
God is not impressed by human strength or self-sufficiency. He delights to draw near to the humble.
This is consistent with His revealed character:
- “Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly.” (Psalm 138:6, KJV)
✝️ 2. The Gospel Pattern: Brokenness Before Restoration
The pattern of Scripture is:
- Brokenness
- Repentance
- Grace
- Restoration
This is seen in David, in Israel, in the prophets, and supremely in the ministry of Jesus Christ.
✝️ 3. Christ as the Fulfilment
Jesus embodies Psalm 34:18:
- He draws near to the broken (Matthew 11:28–30).
- He heals the crushed (Luke 4:18).
- He saves the contrite (Luke 18:13–14).
The nearness of God in Psalm 34 becomes the incarnation in the Gospels.
✝️ 4. The Church as a Community for the Broken
Psalm 34:18 shapes Christian community:
- We do not despise weakness.
- We do not shame sorrow.
- We do not demand self-sufficiency.
- We walk with the broken because God does.
4. Application to Modern Christian Living
🌱 1. For Those in Suffering
If your heart is broken by grief, loss, disappointment, or fear, Psalm 34:18 assures you that God is not far off. His nearness is not dependent on your emotional stability but on His covenant love.
🌱 2. For Those Convicted of Sin
A contrite spirit is not a barrier to God but the very posture He honours. Repentance is not self-loathing; it is the gateway to grace.
🌱 3. For Pastoral Care
This verse calls pastors, elders, and believers to:
- Move toward the hurting
- Speak gently
- Avoid simplistic answers
- Model God’s nearness through presence and prayer
🌱 4. For Personal Devotion
Psalm 34 encourages believers to:
- Praise God even in distress
- Seek Him earnestly
- Trust His deliverance
- Walk in righteousness
- Rest in His nearness

🕊️ Reflective Reading
Read Psalm 34 slowly. Notice how David moves from fear to praise, from danger to trust.34 I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.
4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
9 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.
10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.
11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.
14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
21 Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.
22 The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.
