Commentary on Ephesians 2:10

Ephesians 2:10 (King James Version): “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

Concise Takeaway

Paul teaches that believers are God’s handcrafted new creation in Jesus Christ, redeemed not by works but for works. Good works are not the root of salvation but its fruit, prepared by God and walked out in daily obedience.

1. Exegetical Commentary

A. The Immediate Context: Ephesians 2

Paul’s argument in Ephesians 2[i] moves from human hopelessness to divine grace, from death to life, from wrath to mercy. The chapter emphasises:

  • Human inability:
    Ephesians 2:1 (KJV): “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”
  • God’s initiative:
    Ephesians 2:4–5 (KJV): “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved).”
  • Salvation by grace alone:
    Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV): “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Verse 10 completes this movement by showing the purpose of grace: transformed living.

B. “For we are his workmanship”

The Greek word poiēma means “something made,” “a work of art,” or “a crafted creation.” Believers are not self-made. They are God’s deliberate, skilled handiwork.

This speaks to identity. Christians are not defined by past sin, present struggle, or future uncertainty. They are defined by God’s creative and redemptive work.

C. “Created in Christ Jesus”

Paul does not merely say “changed” or “improved.” He says created. This is new creation language.

Compare:

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV): “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Creation in Christ is not optional or partial. It is a decisive act of God that brings spiritual life, new desires, and new direction.

D. “Unto good works”

Good works are the purpose, not the basis, of salvation. They are the inevitable outflow of new creation.

Paul is clear:

  • We are not saved by good works.
  • We are saved for good works.

This guards against legalism (earning salvation) and antinomianism (ignoring obedience).

E. “Which God hath before ordained”

The phrase means “prepared beforehand.” God has sovereignly arranged the path of obedience for each believer.

This does not imply fatalism. Rather, it shows that Christian obedience is neither random nor self-generated. It is God-enabled and God-directed.

F. “That we should walk in them”

“Walk” is Paul’s favourite metaphor for daily life. Good works are not occasional heroic acts but the steady rhythm of a life shaped by grace.

Compare:

  • Ephesians 4:1 (KJV): “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.”
  • Ephesians 5:2 (KJV): “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.”

Walking is slow, deliberate, and continuous. So is sanctification.

2. Theological Teaching

A. Salvation by Grace Alone

Ephesians 2:10 reinforces the Christian conviction that salvation is entirely God’s work. We contribute nothing to our regeneration. We are God’s workmanship.

B. Union with Christ

“Created in Christ Jesus” highlights union with Christ as the foundation of Christian identity and obedience. All spiritual blessings flow from being united to him.

C. The Necessity of Good Works

Christian theology insists that good works are the necessary evidence of genuine faith. They do not save, but they always accompany salvation.

D. Divine Sovereignty and Human Responsibility

God prepares the works; believers walk in them. Grace does not cancel effort. It empowers it.

E. The Dignity of Ordinary Obedience

Because God ordains the works, even seemingly small acts of faithfulness carry eternal significance.

3. Meditation Guide

A. Reflect on Your Identity

Sit quietly and consider the phrase: “We are his workmanship.” Ask yourself:

  • What false identities am I carrying?
  • How does God’s craftsmanship reshape my sense of worth?

B. Consider the New Creation

Meditate on the reality that you are created in Christ Jesus.

  • What old patterns is God calling you to leave behind?
  • What new desires has he planted in you?

C. Examine Your Walk

Reflect on your daily rhythms.

  • Where do you see God’s prepared works?
  • Where are you resisting his leading?

D. Pray for Alignment

Ask God to help you walk in the works he has prepared. Pray for attentiveness, courage, and joy in obedience.

E. Commit to One Act of Faithfulness Today

Choose one good work that aligns with Scripture and your circumstances. Walk in it deliberately, trusting God’s enabling grace.

4. Practical Application for Modern Christian Living

A. Identity in a Performance Culture

Modern life often ties identity to achievement. Ephesians 2:10 frees believers from this pressure. You are God’s workmanship, not your own project.

B. Purpose in a Fragmented World

Many people feel directionless. Paul teaches that God has prepared meaningful works for every believer. Your life is not random.

C. Encouragement for the Weary

Sanctification is a walk, not a sprint. Progress may feel slow, but God is at work.

D. Motivation for Service

Good works are not burdens but privileges. They are opportunities to display God’s craftsmanship.

E. Guarding Against Legalism

Remember Ephesians 2:8–9. Good works flow from grace; they never earn grace.

F. Guarding Against Passivity

Grace is not an excuse for inactivity. God prepares the works, but believers must walk in them.

[i] Ephesians 2

King James Version

2 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
