Galatians 5:14: Love as the Fulfilment of Christian Freedom
A concise commentary
Scripture Text
Galatians 5:14: “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
Context in Galatians 5
Paul writes Galatians to defend the gospel of grace against any teaching that makes obedience to the law the basis of acceptance with God. Galatians 5[i] begins with freedom in Christ, warns against returning to bondage, and then explains that Christian freedom is not selfish freedom but Spirit-shaped service.
- Galatians 5:1: “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
- Galatians 5:6: “For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.”
- Galatians 5:13: “For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”
- Galatians 5:16: “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
- Galatians 5:22–23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
Exegetical Insights
- “For” connects verse 14 to verse 13. Paul is explaining why freedom must become loving service rather than self-indulgence. Christian liberty is freedom from earning salvation, not freedom from loving obedience.
- “All the law” points to the moral demand of God’s law. Paul does not mean that love replaces God’s holiness. He means that true love fulfils the neighbour-directed aim of the law because love refuses to harm and seeks the good of another.
- “Fulfilled” means brought to its proper goal in practice. The law exposes sin and teaches righteousness, but love is the Spirit-given shape of obedience in those justified by faith.
- “One word” summarises the command. Paul quotes Leviticus 19:18: “thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” This command gathers up the social duties of the law into one clear moral demand.
- “Thy neighbour” is not narrow. In the light of Christ’s teaching, the neighbour includes those near us, those different from us, those in need, and even those we may find difficult to love.
- “As thyself” assumes ordinary self-care as the measure of active care for others. Paul calls believers to extend to others the same concern, patience, and practical help they naturally seek for themselves.
Theological Teaching
- Justification is by faith in Christ, not by works of the law. Galatians 5:4 warns, “Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.” Paul guards the sufficiency of Christ and rejects every attempt to add human merit to the gospel.
- Faith is never barren. Galatians 5:6 says, “faith which worketh by love.” Christian theology rightly distinguishes faith from works in justification, while insisting that true faith produces love as its fruit.
- The Holy Spirit forms Christian obedience. Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” Love is not natural niceness; it is the Spirit’s fruit in a believer united to Christ.
- The law still teaches the shape of love. Believers are not under the law as a covenant of condemnation, but God’s moral will still instructs them. Love fulfils the law because love acts according to God’s holy character.
- Christian freedom is cruciform. The believer’s freedom is patterned by Christ’s self-giving love. Galatians 5:24 says, “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.”
Practical Application to Modern Christian Living
- Use freedom to serve, not to excuse sin. Christian liberty should make believers more generous, patient, and useful, not more self-protective or careless.
- Measure love by action. Ask, “What good would I seek if I were in this person’s place?” Then act with wisdom, truth, and kindness.
- Reject destructive speech. Galatians 5:15 warns, “But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.” Love refuses gossip, contempt, online cruelty, and church conflict that feeds the flesh.
- Let doctrine produce gentleness. Clear doctrine should not make the believer harsh. Gospel clarity should deepen humility, because salvation is by grace.
- Love difficult neighbours. The command includes family members, church members, workmates, strangers, and those whose needs interrupt our plans.
- Walk by the Spirit daily. Love cannot be sustained by willpower alone. Prayer, repentance, Scripture, Christian fellowship, and dependence on the Spirit are ordinary means by which God grows love.
Meditation Guide
- Read slowly: “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
- Consider the gospel: Christ has freed you from trying to earn God’s favour. Galatians 5:1 says, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” Rest in Christ before you examine your obedience.
- Examine your heart: Where has your freedom become self-interest? Where have you defended your preferences more strongly than you have loved your neighbour?
- Name one neighbour: Bring before God one person you need to love with more patience, truth, mercy, or practical help.
- Pray for Spirit-given love: Ask the Holy Spirit to grow the fruit of love in you. Galatians 5:22 says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love.”
- Choose one concrete act: Write down one action you will take today: apologise, encourage, serve, give, listen, forgive, or speak truth with gentleness.
- Close with confession and hope: Confess failures without despair. Give thanks that Christ is sufficient, the Spirit is present, and love is the path of Christian freedom.
[i] Galatians 5
King James Version
5 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
3 For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
8 This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.
9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
10 I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.
11 And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.
12 I would they were even cut off which trouble you.
13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
