Scriptural Context

• Matthew 22:34–36 — “But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”
• Matthew 22:38–40 — “This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
• Deuteronomy 6:4–5 — “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.”

1. Exegetical Insights

• Jesus answers a hostile test with a faithful summary of Scripture. The lawyer asks which commandment is greatest, but Jesus turns the question back to the heart of covenant life: love for the Lord.
• Matthew 22:37 echoes Deuteronomy 6:5, the central confession of Israel’s worship. Jesus does not replace the Old Testament; he fulfils and rightly interprets it.
• The repeated word “all” shows total devotion. Heart, soul, and mind are not separate compartments but a whole-person call to love God with desire, life, will, thought, and obedience.
• Matthew 22:40 makes love for God and neighbour the organising principle of “all the law and the prophets.” True obedience is not bare rule-keeping; it is covenant love expressed in faith and action.

2. Theological Teaching

• God is worthy of whole-hearted love. The Lord is not one loyalty among many. He is the one God, the Creator and Redeemer, and he rightly claims the whole person.
• The law exposes our need for grace. The command is beautiful, but it also reveals our sin. No fallen person has loved God with perfect fullness. This drives us to Christ.
• Christ fulfils what we fail to fulfil. Jesus loved the Father with perfect heart, soul, and mind, and obeyed even unto death. Believers are accepted in him and renewed by his Spirit.
• Love is the fruit of regeneration. Christian theology rightly teaches that saving love for God is not self-produced moral effort. It flows from God’s prior grace, new birth, and the Spirit’s work in the believer.
• Love for neighbour is inseparable from love for God. Matthew 22:39 — “And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” Worship that does not produce mercy, justice, patience, and service is spiritually disordered.

3. Practical Application to Modern Christian Living

• Order your loves. Ask what most shapes your decisions: comfort, reputation, security, work, family, ministry, or God himself. Good gifts become idols when they take first place.
• Love God with your heart. Bring your desires, fears, griefs, and joys to him in prayer. Do not settle for cold duty when Christ invites living fellowship.
• Love God with your soul. Practise repentance, worship, and dependence. Remember that your deepest identity is not your productivity, success, or failure, but your union with Christ.
• Love God with your mind. Think Christianly. Read Scripture carefully, test ideas by God’s word, and resist shallow habits that train the mind away from truth.
• Love your neighbour concretely. Matthew 22:39 gives the outward test of inward devotion: “And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” Start with patience at home, integrity at work, hospitality in church, and practical care for those in need.

4. Meditation Guide

• Read slowly: Matthew 22:37 — “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
• Consider: Where is my love for God divided? What competes for first place in my heart, habits, thinking, and time?
• Confess: Tell the Lord where your love has been cold, distracted, or self-centred. Do not hide. Christ receives sinners who come to him.
• Look to Christ: Give thanks that Jesus loved the Father perfectly in your place and now renews you by grace.
• Pray: “Lord God, teach me to love you with my whole heart, soul, and mind. Reorder my desires, renew my thoughts, strengthen my obedience, and make my love visible in service to my neighbour. Amen.”
• Act today: Choose one concrete act of love for God and one concrete act of love for a neighbour. Keep both small enough to do today and sincere enough to matter.

2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.
4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:
6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.

45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
