2 Chronicles 15:7

2 Chronicles 15:7, in the New King James Version (NKJV), reads: “But you, be strong and do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded!” [5].

This verse is part of a larger narrative in 2 Chronicles 15, where the prophet Azariah is exhorting King Asa and the people of Judah and Benjamin to remain steadfast in their faith and commitment to God [1].

In Reformed Evangelical Christianity, this verse calls to perseverance and faithfulness in one’s walk with Jesus. The “work” mentioned in the verse can be understood as the work of faith – living out the principles of the Gospel in daily life, serving others, and striving for personal holiness [2].

The phrase “be strong and do not let your hands be weak” is an encouragement to remain steadfast and not be discouraged, even when the journey of faith becomes challenging [2]. This aligns with the Reformed emphasis on the perseverance of the saints, the belief that those who are truly saved will persevere in their faith until the end [3].

The promise that “your work shall be rewarded” points to the biblical teaching of divine recompense, that God will reward His faithful servants [2]. This is not a call to a prosperity gospel or a transactional relationship with God, but rather an affirmation of God’s justice and His faithfulness to His promises [4].

Applying this verse to modern Christian living, it serves as a reminder to Christians to remain steadfast in their faith, to continue to live out the teachings of the Gospel in their daily lives, and to trust in God’s promises. It encourages believers to persevere in their faith, even in the face of challenges or discouragement, with the assurance that their faithful “work” will not go unnoticed by God [2].

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 15:7 is a powerful verse that encapsulates key themes of Reformed Evangelical Christianity: the call to a faithful and persevering Christian life, the promise of divine reward, and the assurance of God’s faithfulness and justice [2].
