Psalm 105:1

Psalm 105:1 from the New King James Version (NKJV), which reads: “Oh, give thanks to the LORD! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples!”

Commentary and Theological Teaching

Psalm 105:1 is a call to worship, a summons to express gratitude and to proclaim the mighty works of God [6] [7]. This verse encapsulates three central commands seen throughout the Old and New Testaments [1]:

  1. Give thanks to the LORD: This is a call to express gratitude to God for His goodness and mercy. It’s a reminder that we should always be thankful in all circumstances [1].
  1. Call upon His name: This is an invitation to engage in prayer, to seek God’s presence, and to rely on Him [7]. It underscores the relational aspect of our faith, reminding us that we were created for a relationship with God [1].
  1. Make known His deeds among the peoples: This is a mandate to proclaim God’s deeds, His works of salvation, among all peoples [7]. It’s a call to evangelism, to share the good news of God’s redemptive work through Jesus Christ [1].

This verse underscores the sovereignty of God in salvation [2]. It reminds us that our ability to give thanks, to pray, and to evangelise is all a result of God’s grace [2].

Application to Modern Christian Living

Psalm 105:1 has profound implications for modern Christian living. It calls us to cultivate a lifestyle of gratitude, prayer, and evangelism [1].

  1. Gratitude: We are to be a thankful, grateful people, acknowledging God’s goodness in all circumstances [1].
  1. Prayer: We are to maintain a vibrant prayer life, seeking God’s presence and strength in all areas of our lives [7].
  1. Evangelism: We are to actively share the gospel, making known God’s deeds among all peoples [1].
