I Corinthians 10:13

1 Corinthians 10:13 in the New King James Version reads: “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”

Commentary: This verse is a profound reminder of God’s sovereignty and care for His people. It speaks to the doctrine of God’s providence and the assurance of His faithfulness. The verse assures believers that while temptations are a universal human experience, they are not beyond God’s control or our ability to resist with His help.

The phrase “common to man” indicates that no one is alone or unique in their temptations; they are a shared aspect of the human condition. This can foster a sense of community and mutual support among believers as they face various trials.

The affirmation that God is faithful is central to Reformed theology. It underscores the belief that God is unchanging and reliable, and His promises are sure. He will not permit a believer to be tempted beyond their capacity to resist, which aligns with the doctrine of perseverance of the saints. This doctrine teaches that those truly regenerated by the Holy Spirit will persevere in faith and will not ultimately fall away.

Moreover, the promise of a “way of escape” does not necessarily mean removal from the situation but provides strength and endurance to bear the temptation. This reflects the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, shaping the believer’s character and enabling them to grow in grace through trials.

Application to Modern Christian Living: In today’s world, Christians face a myriad of temptations, from materialism and secular ideologies to moral and ethical compromises. This verse calls believers to rely on God’s faithfulness and to seek the means of grace He provides—such as prayer, Scripture, and fellowship—to endure and overcome these trials.

It also encourages a proactive approach to temptation, suggesting that there is always a righteous option available, and it is the believer’s responsibility to seek and take it. This empowers Christians to live out their faith authentically and counter-culturally, being ‘in the world, but not of the world.’
