New King James Version of Revelation 3:20, reads: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” [6]
Commentary
This verse is part of the message to the church in Laodicea, a church that had become lukewarm in its faith [1]. The image of Christ knocking at the door is not about Jesus asking to enter the life of an unbeliever, but rather it’s about how believers can become lukewarm and push Jesus out, leaving Him standing outside [4].
Christ’s Supplication
The verse begins with “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” This presents an image of Christ’s patience and persistence. He does not force His way in but knocks, waiting for us to open the door [3]. This knocking can be seen as Christ’s call to us through various means – His Word, His Spirit, and life’s circumstances.
Our Response
The next part, “If anyone hears My voice and opens the door,” signifies our part in this relationship. Hearing His voice implies recognising His authority and responding to His call. Opening the door signifies our willingness to let Christ into our lives [3].
Fellowship with Christ
The final part, “I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me,” speaks of the intimate fellowship that results from opening the door to Christ. The act of dining together is a symbol of fellowship and mutual acceptance [2].
Application to Modern Christian Living
This verse calls us to constant vigilance in our spiritual lives. It reminds us that Christ is always ready to enter our lives and fellowship with us, but we must be willing to open the door. It’s a call to self-examination, repentance, and renewed commitment to Christ.
