Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Joshua 1:9 KJV

Commentary on Joshua 1:9

1. The Text

Joshua 1:9 (King James Version):
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

2. Exegetical Commentary

2.1 Immediate Context: Joshua 1[i]

The book of Joshua opens with a moment of profound transition. Moses, the servant of the Lord, has died. Israel stands on the edge of the promised land, facing both opportunity and danger. The Lord appoints Joshua as Moses’ successor and charges him to lead the people across the Jordan.

Joshua 1:1–2 (KJV):
“Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.”

Joshua inherits a daunting task: leading a nation, confronting hostile nations, and stepping into the shoes of Israel’s greatest prophet. The Lord’s repeated command to “be strong and of a good courage” (Joshua 1:6, 1:7, 1:9) is not motivational fluff; it is divine commissioning grounded in divine presence.

2.2 Structure of Joshua 1:9

The verse contains four movements:

  1. A divine reminder of command:
    “Have not I commanded thee?”
This is not a suggestion. Courage is obedience.
  2. A double command:
“Be strong and of a good courage.”
Strength refers to inner fortitude; courage refers to active resolve in the face of danger.
  3. A double prohibition:
“Be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed.”
Fear is the emotional response to threat; dismay is the collapse of will under pressure.
  4. A divine promise:
“For the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Presence is the foundation of courage.

2.3 Key Theological Themes

2.3.1 God’s Command Creates Courage

Courage is not a personality trait but a response to God’s word. Joshua is not told to look within but to look to the Lord who commands and equips.

2.3.2 God’s Presence Is the Ground of Obedience

The Lord does not send Joshua alone. The promise echoes earlier assurances:

Deuteronomy 31:6 (KJV):
“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”

The same God who walked with Moses now walks with Joshua.

2.3.3 Leadership Under God

Joshua’s courage is not for self-advancement but for the sake of God’s people. Biblical leadership is always derivative: God leads; the leader follows.

2.3.4 The Word of God as the Anchor

Earlier in the chapter, God ties Joshua’s success to obedience to Scripture:

Joshua 1:8 (KJV):
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night…”

Courage is sustained by Scripture, not by self-confidence.

3. Application to Modern Christian Living

3.1 Courage in the Christian Life

Christians today face different battles, but the call remains the same. Courage is needed to:

  • live faithfully in a secular environment
  • resist sin
  • persevere through suffering
  • speak the gospel with clarity and love
  • lead families, churches, and communities with integrity

Courage is not bravado. It is quiet, steady obedience grounded in God’s promises.

3.2 The Presence of God in Christ

For believers, the promise “the LORD thy God is with thee” is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

Matthew 28:20 (KJV):
“…and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.”

Christ’s presence through the Holy Spirit empowers believers to face fear with faith.

3.3 Scripture as the Source of Strength

Just as Joshua was to meditate on the law “day and night,” Christians are strengthened by regular engagement with Scripture. Courage grows where the word of God dwells richly.

3.4 Obedience as the Pathway to Courage

Courage is not a feeling but a decision to obey God despite fear. The Lord does not command what he does not also supply.

4. Meditation Guide

4.1 Reflect

Read Joshua 1:9 slowly. Notice the rhythm of command, prohibition, and promise.
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

Ask yourself:

  • Where am I tempted to fear or be dismayed?
  • What has God commanded me that I hesitate to obey?
  • How does the promise of God’s presence speak into my situation?

4.2 Pray

A suggested prayer:

“Lord God, you commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous because you were with him. Help me to trust your presence in my life. Strengthen me to obey your word, resist fear, and walk faithfully wherever you lead. Through Jesus Christ, who is with me always. Amen.”

4.3 Act

Choose one area of life where fear has held you back.
Take one concrete step of obedience this week, trusting that God is with you.

[i] Joshua 1

King James Version

1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,

2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.

8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,

11 Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.

12 And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,

13 Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.

14 Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them;

15 Until the LORD have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses the LORD’s servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sunrising.

16 And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go.

17 According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.

18 Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
