📖 Commentary on Romans 10:17

📜 The Text (King James Version)

Romans 10:17
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

1. 🌿 Exegetical Commentary

1.1 The Flow of Paul’s Argument in Romans 10

Romans 10[i] sits within Paul’s extended discussion (Romans chapters 9 to 11) about God’s sovereign purposes for Israel and the inclusion of the Gentiles. In Romans 10, Paul emphasises:

  • the nearness and accessibility of salvation in Jesus Christ
  • the necessity of proclaiming the gospel
  • the responsibility of people to respond in faith
  • the tragedy of Israel’s unbelief despite hearing the message

Paul’s logic builds toward verse 17. He moves from the universal offer of salvation to the mechanics of how people actually come to believe.

Key surrounding verses

Romans 10:13
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Romans 10:14
“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”

Romans 10:15
“And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”

Paul’s chain of reasoning is clear:

  1. People call on Christ to be saved.
  2. They call because they believe.
  3. They believe because they hear.
  4. They hear because someone proclaims the gospel.
  5. Proclaimers preach because God sends them.

Verse 17 summarises this chain.

1.2 Phrase-by-Phrase Exegesis of Romans 10:17

“So then”

Paul is drawing a conclusion. Faith does not arise from human intuition, mystical experience, or moral striving. It arises from God’s appointed means.

“faith cometh by hearing”

Faith is not self-generated. It is awakened as the message of Christ is heard. The Greek term akoē (“hearing”) can refer both to the act of hearing and the message heard. Paul likely intends both senses.

This hearing is not merely auditory. It is receptive, attentive, and spiritually responsive.

“and hearing by the word of God”

The phrase “word of God” here refers specifically to the gospel message about Jesus Christ. Some manuscripts read “word of Christ,” which fits the context, but the King James Version’s “word of God” is entirely consistent with Paul’s theology.

The point is unmistakable:
God’s word is the instrument through which saving faith is created.

1.3 Theological Themes

1. The Necessity of Gospel Proclamation

God has ordained that people come to faith through the spoken message of Christ. This affirms:

  • the dignity of preaching
  • the necessity of evangelism
  • the responsibility of the church to speak clearly about Jesus

2. The Sovereignty and Grace of God in Salvation

Faith is not a human achievement. It is a gift that comes through God’s appointed means. The Christian tradition rightly emphasises that the Spirit works through the Word to bring life.

3. The Centrality of Scripture

The “word of God” is the foundation of Christian faith. Faith is not grounded in feelings, cultural trends, or personal speculation. It is grounded in God’s revealed truth.

4. The Responsibility of the Hearer

Hearing is not passive. Throughout Romans 10, Paul highlights Israel’s refusal to believe despite hearing the message. Hearing must be accompanied by humble reception.

2. 🌱 Meditation Guide for Modern Christian Living

2.1 Reflect: What am I listening to?
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

We live in a noisy world. Many voices compete for our attention. Paul reminds us that faith grows when we listen to God’s word.

  • What shapes your inner world more: Scripture or social media?
  • Are you giving God’s word space to speak?

2.2 Receive: Am I hearing with a soft heart?

Hearing is more than sound waves hitting the ear. It is a posture of openness.

  • Do I approach Scripture expecting God to speak?
  • Am I resisting something God is saying?

2.3 Respond: How is God calling me to act?

Faith is active trust. Hearing leads to believing, and believing leads to calling on the Lord.

  • What step of obedience is God prompting?
  • Where is He inviting you to trust Him more deeply?

2.4 Share: Who needs to hear the word of God from me?

Paul’s logic places responsibility on believers to speak the gospel.

  • Who in your life has never heard the message of Christ clearly?
  • How might God be sending you?

3. 🧭 Practical Applications

1. Prioritise Scripture intake

Regular reading, listening, and meditation on Scripture strengthens faith. Consider:

  • reading aloud
  • listening to audio Scripture
  • discussing Scripture with others
  • memorising key passages

2. Engage in gospel conversations

Faith comes by hearing. Someone in your life may be waiting for a clear, gentle explanation of the gospel.

3. Support faithful preaching

Pray for your pastors. Encourage them. Value the preached word as God’s appointed means of grace.

4. Cultivate a teachable spirit

Ask God to soften your heart so that His word shapes your beliefs, emotions, and decisions.

[i] Romans 10

King James Version

10 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

19 But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.

20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.

21 But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.
