Commentary on Galatians 5:25
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25 (King James Version)
1. Concise Takeaway
Paul teaches that those who have been given new life by the Holy Spirit must actively keep in step with the Spirit’s leading. Spiritual life is a gift; spiritual obedience is the necessary fruit.
2. Exegetical Commentary
✦ The immediate context: life in contrast to the flesh
Galatians 5[i] is Paul’s vigorous defence of Christian freedom. He warns the Galatians not to return to the slavery of law‑keeping as a means of justification. Instead, he calls them to live out the freedom that Christ has secured.
Key to this freedom is the Spirit’s work. Paul contrasts two ways of life:
- The works of the flesh
(Galatians 5:19–21): “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like…” - The fruit of the Spirit
(Galatians 5:22–23): “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance…”
Paul’s argument is not that Christians must try harder to be spiritual, but that the Spirit produces spiritual fruit in those who belong to Christ.
✦ Exegesis of Galatians 5:25
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
“If we live in the Spirit”
The “if” is not hypothetical. It assumes a reality: believers do live in the Spirit. Paul has already said:
- “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)
- “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.” (Romans 8:9)
To “live in the Spirit” means to have been made alive by the Spirit through union with Christ. It is regeneration, new birth, and new identity.
“Let us also walk in the Spirit”
The verb “walk” carries the sense of keeping in step, following a rule or pattern. It is the language of alignment and obedience.
Paul’s logic is simple and compelling: If the Spirit has given you life, then your daily conduct must reflect that life.
This is not moralism. It is the outworking of grace. It is not self‑improvement. It is Spirit‑empowered transformation. It is not optional. It is the necessary evidence of belonging to Christ.
✦ Theological themes
1. Regeneration precedes obedience
Christian theology emphasises that spiritual life is God’s work alone. We do not walk in the Spirit to earn life; we walk because we have been given life.
2. Sanctification is active and cooperative
The Spirit works in us, yet we are called to walk. Philippians 2:12–13 holds this tension beautifully: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
3. Christian freedom is freedom to obey
Freedom in Christ is not licence. It is liberation from the tyranny of the flesh so that we may bear the fruit of the Spirit.
4. The Spirit shapes community life
Galatians 5:26 immediately follows: “Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” Walking in the Spirit produces humility, unity, and love.
3. Meditation Guide for Personal or Group Use
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
🕊️ Reflect
Read Galatians 5:16–26 slowly. Which list describes the natural tendencies of your heart? Where do you see the Spirit’s fruit already growing?
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.
🕊️ Confess
Acknowledge the areas where you have walked out of step with the Spirit. Confess not only actions but desires and attitudes.
🕊️ Receive
Thank God that you live in the Spirit because of Christ’s finished work. Rest in the truth that the Spirit dwells in you and is committed to your growth.
🕊️ Commit
Ask the Spirit to help you walk in step with him today. Choose one fruit of the Spirit to intentionally practise in your relationships.
🕊️ Pray
“Holy Spirit, you have given me life. Help me to walk in your ways. Shape my desires, guide my steps, and bear your fruit in me for the glory of Jesus Christ.”
4. Practical Application for Modern Christian Living
✦ 1. Cultivate attentiveness to the Spirit
Walking in the Spirit requires listening. This means regular Scripture reading, prayer, and reflection.
✦ 2. Resist the works of the flesh
Paul’s list is confronting because it is recognisable. Modern life offers endless opportunities for anger, envy, sexual immorality, and self‑indulgence. Walking in the Spirit means saying “no” to the flesh because you belong to Christ.
✦ 3. Pursue the fruit of the Spirit intentionally
The fruit is singular, not plural. It is one unified character shaped by the Spirit. Ask:
- How can I show love today
- Where can I practise patience
- What would gentleness look like in my workplace
✦ 4. Walk in community
The Spirit’s work is not merely individual. Church life is the training ground for Spirit‑shaped character. Walking in the Spirit means refusing rivalry, envy, and self‑promotion.
✦ 5. Remember that growth is gradual
Fruit grows slowly. Do not despise small beginnings. Celebrate progress, however modest, as evidence of the Spirit’s faithfulness.
[i] Galatians 5
King James Version
5 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
3 For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
8 This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you.
9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
10 I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.
11 And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.
12 I would they were even cut off which trouble you.
13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
