1 Corinthians 3:7

The image bears the text:
So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
1 Corinthians 3:7 KJV

Commentary on 1 Corinthians 3:7

1 Corinthians 3:7 (KJV): “So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.”

Concise takeaway

Paul teaches that Christian ministry is entirely dependent on God’s sovereign action. Human labour matters, but it does not produce spiritual life. This truth humbles leaders, unites congregations, and calls believers to trust God rather than personalities, methods, or human strength.

1. Exegetical Commentary

🌱 The context of 1 Corinthians 3[i]

The Corinthian church was marked by division. Some aligned themselves with Paul, others with Apollos, and others with Cephas. Paul confronts this factionalism by exposing its root: a worldly, immature view of ministry. He reminds them that Christian leaders are servants, not saviours.

1 Corinthians 3:3–4 (KJV): “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?”

Paul then uses agricultural imagery to reframe their thinking.

🌾 “He that planteth” and “he that watereth”

Paul planted the gospel in Corinth through his preaching. Apollos watered through teaching and pastoral care. Both roles were real and valuable, but neither had the power to bring spiritual life.

1 Corinthians 3:6 (KJV): “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.”

The verbs “plant” and “water” describe faithful ministry. The phrase “gave the increase” describes divine sovereignty. Paul’s point is not that ministry is meaningless, but that ministry is instrumental, not causal. God alone causes spiritual growth.

🌤 “Neither… any thing”

Paul’s language is deliberately strong. He does not mean that ministers are worthless, but that they are not the source of spiritual life. They are servants through whom God works.

This aligns with Jesus’ teaching:

John 15:5 (KJV): “I am the vine, ye are the branches… for without me ye can do nothing.”

🌳 “But God that giveth the increase”

This is the theological centre of the passage. God alone regenerates, sanctifies, and preserves his people. Human ministry is real, but God’s work is decisive.

This reflects the Christian emphasis on:

  • God’s sovereignty in salvation
  • Human responsibility in ministry
  • The humility and unity that flow from grace

2. Theological Teaching

1. God is the author of all spiritual growth

No preacher, program, or strategy can convert a heart. Only God can.

This guards us from pride when ministry appears fruitful and from despair when it appears slow.

2. Ministers are servants, not saviours

Paul and Apollos are “labourers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9), but they are not the foundation.

1 Corinthians 3:11 (KJV): “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

This keeps ministry Christ-centred rather than personality-driven.

3. The church belongs to God

The Corinthians were treating the church as a human organisation built around human leaders. Paul insists it is God’s field and God’s building (1 Corinthians 3:9).

This shapes how we think about leadership, unity, and mission.

4. Grace destroys boasting

If God gives the increase, then no one can boast in themselves.

Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV): “For by grace are ye saved through faith… not of works, lest any man should boast.”

This is the heartbeat of Christian theology.

3. Meditation Guide

🧘‍♂️ Reflect
“So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.”

  • Where am I tempted to rely on human strength, charisma, or strategy rather than God’s power?
  • Do I elevate certain Christian leaders in a way that undermines unity?
  • Do I measure spiritual success by visible results rather than faithfulness?

🙏 Pray

  • Ask God to give humility in service.
  • Ask God to give spiritual growth in your life and in your church.
  • Ask God to protect you from pride when things go well and from discouragement when they do not.

🛠 Apply

  • Serve faithfully, knowing your labour is real but not ultimate.
  • Encourage your pastors and leaders as fellow servants, not spiritual celebrities.
  • Commit to unity in your church, refusing to participate in factions or personality-driven loyalties.
  • Rest in God’s sovereignty when ministry feels slow or difficult.

🌄 Contemplate

Sit quietly with the words:

“God that giveth the increase.”

Let this truth settle into your heart. Let it free you from self-reliance and anxiety. Let it draw you to worship.

[i] 1 Corinthians 3

King James Version

3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?

6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.

10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.

14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

21 Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are your’s;

22 Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are your’s;

23 And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.
