Commentary on 2 Timothy 1:7
1. The Text
2 Timothy 1:7 (King James Version):
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
This verse sits within Paul’s final letter, written from prison in Rome, addressed to Timothy, his “dearly beloved son” in the faith (2 Timothy 1:2). The chapter as a whole is a pastoral charge to persevere in gospel ministry despite suffering, opposition, and personal weakness.
2. Exegetical Commentary
2.1 The Context of 2 Timothy 1
Paul writes as a man facing imminent death (2 Timothy 4:6). He urges Timothy to remain steadfast, to guard the gospel, and to endure hardship. Chapter 1[i] contains several key themes:
- Gospel courage (verses 6 to 8)
- The grace of God in Christ (verses 9 to 10)
- Faithful stewardship of sound doctrine (verses 13 to 14)
- Examples of loyalty and disloyalty (verses 15 to 18)
The verse under consideration is part of Paul’s encouragement to Timothy to “stir up the gift of God” (2 Timothy 1:6) and not to be ashamed of Christ or of Paul’s chains (2 Timothy 1:8).
2.2 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear”
The word translated “fear” (Greek: deilia) refers not to ordinary human anxiety but to cowardice, the shrinking back from duty. Paul is not rebuking Timothy for being naturally timid; he is reminding him that cowardice does not come from God.
This is consistent with the broader biblical witness. For example:
- Romans 8:15:
“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption…” - Joshua 1:9:
“Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid…”
The Christian tradition emphasises that God’s work in believers includes both justification and sanctification. The Spirit who regenerates also strengthens. Cowardice is not a fruit of the Spirit.
2.3 “But of power”
The “power” (dynamis) here is not worldly strength but Spirit–given capacity to fulfil God’s calling. It is the same power that raised Christ from the dead (Ephesians 1:19 to 20).
19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
This power enables:
- bold proclamation of the gospel
- endurance in suffering
- faithfulness in weakness
- confidence in God’s sovereignty
Paul himself embodies this power:
2 Timothy 1:12:
“For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed…”
2.4 “And of love”
Christian courage is never harsh or self-assertive. The Spirit produces love—the self-giving, Christlike love that seeks the good of others.
This love:
- shapes ministry
- restrains pride
- fuels compassion
- reflects the character of Christ
As Paul writes elsewhere:
1 Corinthians 13:2:
“And though I have the gift of prophecy… and have not charity, I am nothing.”
2.5 “And of a sound mind”
The phrase “sound mind” (sōphronismos) carries the idea of self-control, sober judgement, and disciplined thinking. It is the opposite of panic or confusion.
The Spirit forms in believers:
- clarity of thought
- steadiness under pressure
- wisdom in decision-making
- doctrinal stability
This aligns with Paul’s later instruction:
2 Timothy 1:13:
“Hold fast the form of sound words…”
The Spirit does not produce impulsiveness or instability but gospel-shaped discernment.
3. Theological Teaching
3.1 The Spirit’s Work in the Believer
This verse summarises the Spirit’s sanctifying work:
- Power – enabling obedience
- Love – shaping character
- Sound mind – guiding judgement
Christian theology emphasises that sanctification is both definitive (God sets us apart) and progressive (God grows us over time). This verse reflects both aspects.
3.2 The Nature of Christian Courage
Christian courage is not bravado. It is:
- grounded in God’s character
- fuelled by the Spirit
- expressed in love
- exercised with wisdom
It is courage shaped by the cross.
3.3 The Call to Perseverance
Paul’s exhortation to Timothy is also God’s word to the church today. The gospel is entrusted to us (2 Timothy 1:14), and we are called to guard it with Spirit-given courage.
4. Application to Modern Christian Living
4.1 For Personal Discipleship
- When fear arises, remember that cowardice does not come from God.
- Ask the Spirit to strengthen you with power to obey Christ.
- Practise love in difficult relationships.
- Cultivate a sound mind through Scripture, prayer, and wise counsel.
4.2 For Ministry and Service
- Ministry requires courage, but not self-generated courage.
- Serve with love, not frustration or resentment.
- Make decisions with sober judgement, not impulse.
- Guard the gospel with clarity and conviction.
4.3 For Times of Cultural Pressure
Christians face increasing pressure to conform to secular norms. This verse reminds us:
- God equips us for faithfulness.
- Courage must be paired with love.
- Sound doctrine produces sound thinking.
- The Spirit sustains us in public witness.
4.4 For Suffering and Uncertainty
When facing illness, grief, or hardship:
- God gives power to endure.
- Love sustains relationships.
- A sound mind helps resist despair.
- Fear is real, but it does not rule the believer.
5. Meditation Guide
5.1 Slow Reading
Read 2 Timothy 1:7 aloud several times. Emphasise a different word each time:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
- God hath not given us…
- God hath not given us…
- God hath not given us…
- …the spirit of fear…
- …but of power…
- …and of love…
- …and of a sound mind.
5.2 Reflection Questions
- Where do I experience fear or timidity in my Christian life?
- How has God already shown His power in my life?
- What would it look like to act in love in my current situation?
- Where do I need a sound mind—clarity, steadiness, or self-control?
- What step of obedience is God calling me to take?
5.3 Prayer
“Father, thank you that You have not given me a spirit of fear. By Your Spirit, strengthen me with power, fill me with love, and grant me a sound mind. Help me to live faithfully for Christ in every circumstance. Amen.”
5.4 Practical Exercises
- Memorise 2 Timothy 1:7.
- Write down one fear you want to surrender to God.
- Identify one act of love you can do this week.
- Make one decision with deliberate, prayerful thought.
[i] 2 Timothy 1
King James Version
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,
2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;
5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.
16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:
17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.
18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
