Commentary on Romans 1:17
King James Version (public domain)
Romans 1:17 — “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
1. Concise Takeaway
Paul teaches that the gospel unveils God’s saving righteousness, received through faith alone, and that this faith shapes the whole Christian life. This truth anchors the believer’s assurance, fuels obedience, and calls us to a life marked by trust in God’s promises rather than self-reliance.
2. Exegetical Commentary
2.1 Immediate Context: Romans 1[i]
Paul opens Romans by declaring his calling to preach the gospel, which concerns God’s Son, Jesus Christ. He then states the theme of the entire letter in Romans 1:16–17.
Romans 1:16 — “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
Verse 17 explains why Paul is not ashamed: the gospel reveals God’s righteousness.
2.2 “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed”
The phrase “therein” refers to the gospel. The “righteousness of God” in Romans carries a rich, multi-layered meaning:
- God’s own righteous character — He is faithful, just, and true.
- God’s saving action — He puts sinners right with Himself.
- The righteous status given to believers — a gift, not earned.
Paul later clarifies:
Romans 3:21–22 — “But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested… Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe.”
This righteousness is not human achievement but divine gift. It is revealed in the gospel because the gospel proclaims Christ’s atoning work and resurrection.
2.3 “From faith to faith”
This phrase has been debated for centuries. In Christian evangelical theology, the most coherent reading is:
- Faith from beginning to end — faith is the instrument by which we receive God’s righteousness, and faith is the ongoing posture of the Christian life.
- Faith that grows — believers move from initial faith to deeper, persevering faith.
- Faith shared among believers — the gospel creates a community of faith.
Paul’s emphasis is that righteousness is not by works, merit, or law-keeping. It is entirely grounded in faith in Christ.
2.4 “As it is written, The just shall live by faith”
Paul quotes Habakkuk 2:4:
Habakkuk 2:4 — “Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.”
Habakkuk contrasts the proud person who trusts in himself with the righteous person who trusts in God. Paul uses this Old Testament text to show that justification by faith is not a new idea but the consistent pattern of God’s dealings with His people.
The phrase “shall live” carries both present and future significance:
- Present — the believer’s daily life is shaped by faith.
- Future — eternal life is promised to those who trust in Christ.
3. Theological Teaching
3.1 Justification by Faith Alone
Romans 1:17 is the seed from which the doctrine of justification by faith alone blossoms throughout the letter. The Reformers saw this verse as the “gateway to paradise” because it reveals:
- We are declared righteous not because of our works,
- but because of Christ’s righteousness,
- received through faith alone.
This is the heart of the gospel.
3.2 God’s Righteousness as Gift and Power
The gospel does not merely inform; it transforms. God’s righteousness is:
- A gift — imputed to believers.
- A power — shaping the believer’s life.
- A revelation — showing God’s faithfulness to His promises.
3.3 Faith as Trust, Dependence, and Perseverance
Faith is not mere intellectual agreement. It is:
- Trust in Christ’s finished work,
- Dependence on God’s promises,
- Perseverance through trials,
- Obedience flowing from gratitude.
4. Meditation Guide for Modern Christian Living
4.1 Reflect on God’s Righteousness
“For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
Ask:
- Do I see God’s righteousness as a gift or something I try to earn
- Do I rest in Christ’s finished work or in my own performance
Meditate on Romans 5:1:
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
4.2 Examine Your Faith
Faith is not static. Consider:
- Where is my faith growing
- Where is it weak
- What promises of God am I struggling to trust
Pray for the Spirit to strengthen your faith.
4.3 Live by Faith Daily
Living by faith means:
- Trusting God’s character when circumstances are difficult,
- Obeying God’s Word even when it is costly,
- Rejecting self-reliance and pride,
- Walking in humility and gratitude.
4.4 Share the Gospel Without Shame
Paul was “not ashamed” because he knew the gospel’s power. In a secular context, Christians often feel pressure to keep quiet. Romans 1:17 encourages us to speak with confidence, humility, and love.
4.5 Cultivate a Community of Faith
“From faith to faith” reminds us that faith is nurtured in community.
- Encourage others.
- Share testimonies of God’s faithfulness.
- Pray together.
- Bear one another’s burdens.
[i] Romans 1
King James Version
1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:
7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.
11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;
12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
13 Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.
15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
