Commentary on Proverbs 9:10

Proverbs 9:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” (King James Version)

1. Concise Takeaway

Proverbs 9:10 teaches that true wisdom begins with a reverent, humble, obedient posture before the Lord, and that genuine understanding flows from knowing God as he truly is.

Everything else in Proverbs 9—Lady Wisdom’s call and the rival call of Folly—turns on this central truth. The heart that fears the Lord will walk in life; the heart that rejects him will drift toward destruction.

2. Exegetical Commentary

📘 Literary Context: Proverbs 9 as the Culmination of Chapters 1–9

Proverbs 9[i] completes the opening section of the book, where the father addresses his son and contrasts two ways of living: the way of wisdom and the way of folly. The chapter presents two invitations:

  • Wisdom’s invitation
    (Proverbs 9:1–6):

“Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.” (Proverbs 9:6)

  • Folly’s invitation
    (Proverbs 9:13–18):

“But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.” (Proverbs 9:18)

Between these invitations sits Proverbs 9:10, the theological centrepiece of the chapter and the interpretive key to the entire book.

📘 Word-Level Observations

  • “Fear of the LORD”
This is not terror but reverent awe, a posture of humility, trust, and obedience. It is covenantal language, describing the right response to the God who has revealed himself.
  • “Beginning”
The Hebrew term reshith means both “starting point” and “chief principle.” Wisdom does not merely start with fearing the Lord; it depends on it.
  • “Knowledge of the holy”
The phrase refers to knowing God himself—his character, his holiness, his ways. This is relational knowledge, not mere information.
  • “Understanding”
Understanding is the ability to discern reality as God sees it. It is moral, spiritual, and practical.

📘 Theological Themes

  1. Wisdom is fundamentally theological.
Proverbs is not a secular self-help book. Its wisdom is grounded in the character of God.
  2. Human wisdom is derivative.
We do not generate wisdom; we receive it from God as we submit to him.
  3. Holiness is central to understanding.
To know God’s holiness is to see the world rightly—sin becomes sinful, righteousness becomes desirable, and life becomes purposeful.
  4. Two ways to live.
Proverbs 9 frames life as a choice between wisdom and folly. Neutrality is impossible.

3. Meditation Guide

🧠 Reflect

Read Proverbs 9 slowly. Notice the contrast between the two women—Wisdom and Folly.

Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.
14 For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
15 To call passengers who go right on their ways:
16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

Ask:

  • Which voice do I tend to follow in my daily decisions?
  • Do I treat the fear of the Lord as optional or essential?
  • How does knowing God’s holiness shape my choices?

🙏 Pray

A suggested prayer:

“Lord, teach me to fear you rightly. Give me a heart that delights in your holiness and walks in your wisdom. Guard me from the seduction of folly and lead me in the way of life.”

🛠 Apply

  1. Cultivate reverence.
Begin each day acknowledging God’s holiness and authority. This is the soil in which wisdom grows.
  2. Practise obedience in small things.
Wisdom is not abstract; it is lived. Choose honesty, patience, purity, and humility.
  3. Seek God’s character in Scripture.
The more you know the Holy One, the more you will understand life.
  4. Reject counterfeit wisdom.
Folly often sounds appealing—easy pleasure, shortcuts, self-centredness. Proverbs 9 warns that these paths lead to death.
  5. Walk with wise companions.
Wisdom grows in community. Surround yourself with believers who fear the Lord.
