Commentary on John 1:14

Primary text — John 1[i]:14: “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

1. Exegetical insights

• “The Word” is the eternal Son. John begins with Christ before creation: John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The one who became flesh is not a created messenger, but God the Son.
• “Was made flesh” means true incarnation. The Son did not merely appear human. He took real human nature without ceasing to be God. John 1:3: “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” The Creator entered his creation.
• “Dwelt among us” echoes God’s presence with his people. The language points to God tabernacling with Israel. Exodus 40:34: “Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.” In Jesus, God’s presence is personally and finally revealed.
• “We beheld his glory” points to eyewitness testimony. John speaks as a witness to Christ’s revealed majesty, seen in his signs, words, holiness, death, and resurrection. John 1:18: “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”
• “Full of grace and truth” shows the character of God’s saving revelation. Jesus reveals covenant mercy and divine faithfulness. John 1:17: “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”

2. Theological teaching

• The incarnation is central to the gospel. The eternal Son became truly human to reveal God, obey in our place, suffer for sinners, and bring us to the Father.
• Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. John protects both truths: the Word “was God” and the Word “was made flesh.” This is doctrinally essential for salvation.
• Revelation comes through Christ. We do not climb up to God by speculation. God comes down to us in his Son. John 14:9: “Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father…”
• Grace and truth meet in Christ. Jesus does not lower God’s holiness; he fulfils it. He does not dilute grace; he embodies it. John 1:12: “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”

3. Practical application

• Receive Christ personally. Admiration is not enough. John calls us to believe and receive. John 20:31: “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”
• Trust God’s nearness in ordinary life. The Son “dwelt among us,” so Christian faith is not detached from grief, work, weakness, relationships, or suffering.
• Practise grace and truth together. Speak truth without harshness, and show grace without compromise. Christ-like maturity refuses both cruelty and cowardice.
• Worship with reverence and warmth. The glory of God is seen in Jesus. Bible reading, prayer, church gathering, and service should be shaped by wonder, not routine alone.

Read slowly: Read John 1:1–18 aloud, then reread John 1:14 three times.

• Observe: What does the verse say about who Jesus is, what he became, where he dwelt, what was seen, and what he is full of?
• Reflect: Ask, “Where am I tempted to think God is distant, vague, or reluctant to show grace?”
• Pray: “Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Word made flesh, help me behold your glory, receive your grace, walk in your truth, and trust your nearness today. Amen.”
• Practise today: Choose one relationship where you will show both grace and truth in a concrete way.

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptising with water.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
