John 10:10

Commentary on John 10:10 (NKJV)

John 10:10 (NKJV): “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

Context and Overview

John 10 is a chapter rich with imagery and theological significance. Jesus uses the metaphor of a shepherd and his sheep to illustrate His relationship with His followers. The chapter begins with Jesus describing Himself as the “Good Shepherd” who knows His sheep and is known by them. This metaphor is deeply rooted in the Old Testament, where God is often depicted as the Shepherd of Israel (e.g., Psalm 23).

Theological Teaching from John 10:10

In John 10:10, Jesus contrasts His mission with that of the thief. The thief represents false teachers, religious leaders, and ultimately, Satan, who seeks to harm and lead astray God’s people. The thief’s purpose is to “steal, kill, and destroy,” which signifies the destructive nature of sin and falsehood.

In contrast, Jesus declares that He has come to give life, and not just life, but life “more abundantly.” This abundant life is not merely a promise of material wealth or physical well-being but a profound spiritual reality. It encompasses eternal life, a restored relationship with God, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which brings peace, joy, and purpose.

Application to Modern Christian Living

For modern Christians, John 10:10 serves as a reminder of the fullness of life that Jesus offers. In a world filled with distractions and false promises, believers are called to find their satisfaction and purpose in Christ alone. The abundant life Jesus promises is characterised by:

  1. Spiritual Fulfilment: True contentment and joy come from a relationship with Jesus, who meets our deepest spiritual needs.
  1. Eternal Perspective: Understanding that our ultimate hope and home are in heaven, which shapes how we live and make decisions on earth.
  1. Purpose and Mission: Living out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) by sharing the gospel and making disciples, reflecting the abundant life we have received.

John 10:10 underscores the doctrines of grace and the sovereignty of God in salvation. The abundant life is a gift of God’s grace, not something earned by human effort. It is through Christ’s atoning sacrifice and resurrection that believers receive this life.

Theologians emphasise that this passage highlights the security of the believer in Christ. Just as a shepherd protects his sheep, Jesus ensures the eternal security of those who belong to Him. This assurance is rooted in God’s unchanging character and promises.
