Commentary on Daniel 12:3

Context in Daniel 12

Daniel 12[i] closes Daniel’s final vision. It speaks of severe trouble, divine deliverance, resurrection, judgement, and final hope. “Daniel 12:1” says, “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, everyone that shall be found written in the book.” The hope of verse 3 rests on God’s sovereign power to preserve his people through suffering and bring them into everlasting life.

“Daniel 12:2” says, “And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” This verse gives the immediate setting for Daniel 12:3. The shining of the wise is not vague inspiration; it is resurrection glory after judgement.

Exegetical insights

• “They that be wise” are those who understand God’s ways and remain faithful under pressure. In Daniel’s book, true wisdom is not cleverness but covenant faithfulness, humble dependence, and reverent obedience.
• “Shall shine” points to vindication. Those who may look weak, marginal, or defeated in this age will be publicly honoured by God in the age to come.
• “As the brightness of the firmament” uses creation imagery. God’s faithful people will reflect his splendour, not as independent lights, but as those made glorious by grace.
• “They that turn many to righteousness” describes faithful witness. The wise do not merely survive; they help others walk in righteousness before God.
• “For ever and ever” anchors the promise in eternity. The reward is not temporary recognition but everlasting life in God’s presence.

Theological teaching

• God is sovereign over history. Daniel 12 does not deny suffering, but it places suffering under God’s final rule.
• Resurrection is central to biblical hope. “John 5:28–29” says, “Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.”
• Salvation is by grace, producing righteousness. “Romans 3:22” says, “Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference.” Those who turn many to righteousness point others to the righteousness God gives, not to human merit.
• Believers will be glorified in Christ. “Matthew 13:43” says, “Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” Daniel’s promise is fulfilled in the final glory of God’s people.

Practical application

• Live wisely by trusting God when life is confusing, painful, or unjust.
• Measure success by faithfulness, not visibility, applause, or comfort.
• Speak the gospel clearly and humbly, helping others see their need of Christ and his righteousness.
• Encourage weary Christians with resurrection hope rather than shallow optimism.
• Practise quiet endurance. The Lord sees hidden faithfulness and will make all things right.

Meditation guide

• Read: Slowly read Daniel 12:1–3, especially “Daniel 12:3” — “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.”
• Reflect: Where am I tempted to seek present honour rather than future glory with Christ?
• Examine: Am I helping others turn to righteousness, or am I keeping spiritual truth private out of fear?

11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.
12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.
13 But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.
