Commentary on Galatians 5:22–23

Galatians 5:22–23.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

Context in Galatians 5[i]

Paul writes to defend the gospel of grace against any teaching that makes law-keeping the basis of acceptance with God. Christian freedom is not self-rule. It is freedom from condemnation and freedom for loving service through the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5:1. “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

Galatians 5:13. “For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”

Galatians 5:16. “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”

Galatians 5:24–25. “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

Exegesis of Galatians 5:22–23

• “But” marks a sharp contrast with the “works of the flesh” in Galatians 5:19–21. Galatians 5:19–21. “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like…”
• “Fruit” is singular. Paul presents one Spirit-formed character with several visible qualities, not a menu of optional virtues.
• “Of the Spirit” means the source is God the Holy Spirit. This fruit is not self-improvement dressed in religious language. It grows from union with Christ and the Spirit’s sanctifying work.
• “Love, joy, peace” describe the heart reshaped by the gospel: love that serves, joy grounded in God, and peace flowing from reconciliation with God.
• “Longsuffering, gentleness, goodness” describe patient, kind, and morally generous conduct towards other people.
• “Faith, meekness, temperance” include faithfulness, humility under God’s hand, and self-control over desires.
• “Against such there is no law” means no righteous law condemns this life. The law can expose sin, but only the Spirit produces the character God loves.

Theological teaching

• Justification is by faith in Christ, not by works. The fruit of the Spirit is evidence of grace, not the price of grace. Galatians 2:16. “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ…”
• Sanctification is the Spirit’s real work in believers. God does not merely forgive; he renews. Romans 8:13. “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”
• Christ is the pattern and source of the fruit. Believers bear fruit by abiding in him. John 15:5. “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit…”
• The fruit is communal. Paul is concerned with churches fractured by pride, envy, and self-assertion. Spirit-shaped people serve, forgive, endure, and pursue peace.

Practical application for modern Christian living

• Do not measure spiritual maturity by noise, platform, or personality. Look for love, patience, faithfulness, humility, and self-control.
• Bring ordinary frustrations to God: family tension, workplace pressure, online conflict, ageing, disappointment, and fatigue.
• Repent of both obvious sin and respectable sin: anger, self-pity, jealousy, harsh speech, and needing to win every argument.
• Practise dependence, not performance. Pray, obey Scripture, confess sin, receive correction, and stay close to Christian fellowship.
• Ask daily: “Where is the Spirit calling me to serve in love rather than defend myself?”

Meditation guide

• Read slowly: Galatians 5:22–23. Notice that the fruit belongs to the Spirit before it appears in the believer.
• Consider: Which fruit is most visible in my life at present? Which is least visible?
• Confess: Name one “work of the flesh” that is resisting the Spirit’s rule.
• Pray: “Holy Spirit, grow in me what I cannot produce by myself. Make me more like Christ in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, and self-control.”
• Act: Choose one concrete act of love today: apologise, listen, forgive, encourage, give, or remain silent instead of reacting.

2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
3 For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
