Children and Parents

6 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honour your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Bondservants and Masters

5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, 6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free. 9 Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.

The Whole Armour of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

21 So that you also may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord will tell you everything. 22 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts.

23 Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible.

Ephesians 6:11 “Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”

1. Exegesis

Paul’s command, “Put on,” calls for deliberate, continuing dependence on what God supplies. The “whole armour of God” is not a collection of human techniques. It is God’s own provision: truth, righteousness, readiness produced by the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the word of God, and persevering prayer.

The purpose is “that you may be able to stand.” The Christian does not win salvation by fighting; the Christian stands in the salvation already given in Christ. The enemy’s “schemes” are calculated forms of deception, accusation, temptation, division, and discouragement. The conflict is therefore real, spiritual, and beyond unaided human strength.

The immediate context makes the source of strength explicit. Ephesians 6:10 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” The wider passage also identifies the true arena of conflict. Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” People are not the church’s ultimate enemy.

2. Theological Teaching

• Salvation is by grace and produces a new life. The armour command rests on the gospel already unfolded in the letter. Ephesians 2:8–10 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
• Christ has supreme authority. Spiritual warfare is not a contest between equal powers. Ephesians 1:20–22 “that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church.”
• God preserves his people through appointed means. Believers stand by using the truth, gospel, faith, Scripture, and prayer that God supplies, within the shared life of the church. Divine preservation does not make watchfulness unnecessary; it makes faithful watchfulness possible.
• The battle is already decided, but not yet finished. Christ has triumphed, yet believers still resist evil until he returns. Confidence and vigilance therefore belong together.

3. Practical Application

• Begin with dependence, not self-confidence. Pray for strength before facing temptation, conflict, difficult work, or suffering.
• Answer lies with God’s truth. Learn Scripture in context, receive faithful preaching, and test persuasive claims by God’s word.
• Guard against misdirected hostility. Do not treat neighbours, family members, colleagues, or cultural opponents as the ultimate enemy. Speak truth without contempt.
• Use the whole armour. Do not rely on knowledge while neglecting prayer, or on activity while neglecting faith and holiness.
• Stand together. Paul addresses the church corporately. Seek worship, fellowship, pastoral care, mutual encouragement, and prayer rather than isolated struggle.
• Remain alert in ordinary life. The enemy often works through plausible compromises, cherished resentment, secret sin, despair, and distorted teaching. Repent early, and return quickly to Christ.

4. Meditation Guide

1. Read: Slowly read Ephesians 6:10–12 twice. Ephesians 6:10–12 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 2. Notice: What does God command? What does God provide? What threat does Paul identify?
3. Confess: Where have you trusted your resolve, treated another person as the enemy, entertained a lie, or neglected prayer?
4. Remember: Christ reigns above every power. You stand in his strength, not your own.
5. Pray: “Father, clothe me with all that you provide in Christ. Make me truthful, righteous, ready with the gospel, firm in faith, assured of salvation, governed by your word, and constant in prayer. Keep me watchful, humble, and steadfast. Amen.”
6. Act: Name one pressure you face today. Choose one concrete response shaped by truth, faith, prayer, and love.
