John 8:31–32: “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

John 8:34–36: “Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

John 14:6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

1. Exegesis of John 8:32

Jesus speaks John 8:32 to people who had “believed on him,” yet he immediately tests the reality of that belief by calling them to continue in his word. True discipleship is not a passing interest in Jesus, nor a merely religious identity. It is a persevering attachment to his teaching, his person, and his saving authority.

The “truth” is not bare information. In the Gospel according to John, truth is revealed in Jesus Christ himself, who says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). To know the truth is to receive God’s revelation in Christ, to be exposed by it, instructed by it, and reconciled to God through it.

The freedom promised is explained by the following verses. Jesus is not mainly speaking about political, social, or psychological freedom, though his grace may reform these areas. He is speaking first of liberation from sin’s guilt, blindness, mastery, and final judgement. “Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin” (John 8:34). Only the Son can make sinners “free indeed” (John 8:36).

2. Theological Teaching

Human need: All people are naturally enslaved to sin apart from God’s grace. The problem is deeper than poor choices; it is spiritual bondage.
Saving truth: God’s truth is centred on Christ, not on human opinion, self-definition, or cultural fashion.
Grace and perseverance: Continuing in Christ’s word is not the cause of salvation, as though we earn freedom by endurance. Rather, it is the evidence of genuine discipleship, sustained by God’s grace.
Christ’s authority: The Son alone gives true freedom because he alone has eternal standing in the Father’s house.
Christian emphasis: The verse guards both doctrine and devotion. God’s word reveals Christ, Christ liberates the sinner, and the liberated disciple lives under the gracious rule of Christ.

3. Practical Application for Modern Christian Living

Abide in Scripture: Do not treat the Bible as occasional inspiration. Sit under it daily, humbly, and obediently.
Test your freedoms: Ask whether your choices make you more available to love God and neighbour, or more captive to self, image, comfort, resentment, or fear.
Reject shallow belief: Respectable religion without submission to Christ cannot free the conscience.
Bring hidden sins into the light: Christ’s truth exposes sin to heal, not to crush the repentant believer.
Live as a freed servant: Christian freedom is not autonomy. It is joyful obedience to the Son who has redeemed us.

Read slowly: John 8:31–36.
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Notice the movement from continuing in Jesus’ word, to knowing the truth, to being made free by the Son.

Adore: Praise Christ as the Truth who reveals the Father and frees sinners.
Confess: Name before God the sins, fears, or false beliefs that still seek to master you.
Receive: Rest in Christ’s promise: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
Respond: Choose one concrete act of obedience that shows you are continuing in his word.
Pray: “Lord Jesus Christ, true Son of the Father, keep me in your word. Expose every lie I love, forgive every sin I excuse, and make me free to serve you with gladness. Amen.”

2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?
6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
